Well, Trent started out using mainly his Kurzweil K2000. I can not really say that what he produces today is so much better than what he did in the beginning with much less gear.
As always, it isn't what you got, it's what you do with it that counts.

So does it say on the site the gear all belongs to NIN? A lot of people just hire the stuff for recording sessions, or use a studio that has what they need ...

I had the opportunity to spend a day with Trent in 1991. Dang, that was a long time ago. That was when "Pretty Hate Machine" was out. He had several Emulators and what we would call vintage stuff now. He kept a portable DAT recorder and would listen for industrial sounds around New Orleans (where he lived). He was good friends with my girlfriend at the the time, and she eventually left me for him. Hahaha, smart girl?
My two cents is that having that much gear could only be a distraction. Just looking for the perfect sound would damper the creative juices. When I had a room full of gear (not near that much), I was always jumping from one thing to another and had a hard time focusing. Gear ADD.

He's just got a toyroom. But wouldn't we all if we could?
You can tell by all the monitors...he obviously just bought them because he could...no need for that many at all. And the lights down low so that all the units light up and make a display. Can't be using a fraction of them at any one time.
Still...I'm envious. I used to like my h/w studio. Will go back like a flash to h/w when I get the appropriate space converted. Haven't had the room for it for several years...
As mentioned...there really isn't half the fun moving a mouse. I don't care what s/w can do, it just isn't as much fun as most h/w. I used to have miles of spaghetti and units galore, and it was all very confusing and impractical, but my musical output, and the speed at which I did it outstripped anything I've done with s/w. S/w looks easier at first glance, but to me, it software that leeches inspiration. You can't but help feeling inspired to do something when you've got a huge bank of flashing lights and knobs to twiddle in front of you.
Admit it. If almost all of you were in that NIN studio...you wouldn't be able to resist getting in there and making some noises and music and twiddling with knobs. Can you really say that about a screen and a stupid mouse?
It's no wonder Trent Reznor release 2 albums every 4 hours. Who wouldn't with all those lovely toys. He's fulfilled his own and all of our fantasies. We just don't like admitting it.
Mind you...you're right...he still makes shit music.

actually more like one album every five to six years... (apparently with the exception of this upcoming one)
and mind you, while the lyrics sometimes don't really do it for me - the music's cool in my book.

That's a crapload of hardware!
I'd be happy with about 1/4 of that.. in fact, I've started filling up my five foot tall 19in. slant-top rackmount cabinet again! Used hardware is CHEAP nowadays!
DOWN WITH SOFTWAAARRREEEE! DOWN WITH BILL GATES AND STEVE JOBS!!

lol don't worry about him. He happens to douche up every thread I've seen him in.
Besides, everyone knows that Final Fantasy 7 was better.
