Funny, I was just talking with an old friend (who's currently with Interscope) and we were just talking about Mr. Reznor and his toys. This person has seen/hung out with Trent many times over the past 5 years and he was giving me some dirt.

For those who aren't haters and who give a damn:

His new album is supposed to be alot more 'hands on'. For awhile there, he was handing stuff off to assistants, and saying things like: "I want it to sound a little like Einsturzende." (SIC) Apparently his new drug-free persona has him realizing he wants to be more 'involved' with his music. (Go figure.)

Even though a Reznor fanboy, I haven't exceedingly cared for his recent stuff, and hopefully this 'hands on' approach yields better 'Trent-ness'.

hopefully this added something to the discussion, other than feeding haters. Maybe it was just a semi-related ramble.

Thanks for some inside dirt. Would love to see NIN (Trent) return to his old roots and get back to the good tracks.

I sure hope he gets back on track. I'm not a big fan of his last album, which isnt good since ive been a NiN fan since Pretty Hate Machine.

for who may be interested, two tracks are legally available, through some kind of hype-building game

Pretty Hate Machine is the only album of his that I've liked. I just always felt like he blew his wad on that one.

Thanks for the links. Definitely sounding better than the last album. The mixes sucked, but I'm sure those aren't final mixes/masters. The music is getting back to the NIN I dig, although the vocal hooks seem a tad weaker than they could be. Still better than the last album. I'll probably buy this new one, assuming there's no DRM junk on the disc.

Most of the guitars are processed with Reaktor.

to hear 2 new tracks, check the nin myspace...

honestly, the tracks are kinda reminiscent of the stuff from from the last album. the first single (survivalism) is kinda similar (in my opinion at least) to Hand That Feeds but it's still kinda catchy (been in my head since i heard it)...

honestly, i hope the new album's better than the last one. haven't really been that impressed since downward spiral came out.

for knowing what gear they use, reznor's given tons of interviews to gear mags like keyboard and future music... also someone was saying that they had some stuff posted about pres and ad converters on the site a while back...

also here's a link to one of those NI "interviews"...

always in these nin gear threads, someone mentions sample cell turbo-synth because trent supposedly put a ton of guitars through it during the making of Broken. we had digidesign sample cell in the electroacoustic labs when i was doing my undergrad. honestly, i wasn't that impressed with it but you use what you have to to get by. when someone told me that that turbosynth was the same shit trent was going on about, i couldn't beleive it. all i say is thank god for reaktor...

Post

yeah, the last disc really only had 2 tracks i cared for, the first track and that "beside you in time" track... the rest sounded kinda dated (dare i say).

Well regardless of who likes Nine Inch Nails or not, there has to be some respect for what Trent Reznor has done. With songs like ; Reptile, And all that could have been, Leaving hope, The Frail, Hurt, The Wretched... (Just to name a few) in my opinion are sheer genius. I know personally I would not have gotten serious with Song Writting/Production had I never listen to Nine Inch Nails before. But thats just me. To each there own. I just really try to pick apart music today to see whats behind it and to the trained ear you can really tell which artists put effort and emotion in their music. Nin to me is definatly one of them.

But when it comes to the amount of gear used as seen in the pictures posted, I think it's more for options. Some gear might be used for one thing in one song and one time only. Any musician i'm sure would agree that with lack of gear comes limitations. Remove that and the only limitations are really just yourself. Again this is just my opinion. To be taken with a grain of salt. Music is music, there's no right or wrong. It just is what it is to anyone thats listening.

You can actually stream and listen to all the tracks from the album from the official NIN website. There also have been leaked versions of it on the internet as well.

and yet they are still using POS furman looking 1u metal-oxide-varistor based rackmount surge units for their "line conditioning".

when will people ever learn that they do nothing for your noise floor. nothing at all. might as well use a dollar store power strip.
