The guitarist in my Sabbath cover band uses Traynors when we play, and he has vintage Marshalls and Laneys...seriously, his amp collection could make you sick.

...but thay sound great. Plus, it's very hard to make any douchebag music with them. They have a built-in douche limiter, if I recall correctly.

Whereas the Orange amps actually seem to increase douchehood.

Seriously, what up with those things?

I blame the hipsters. Orange's whole reputation is based on people seeing bands play them in videos from the 70's...but the joke is that most of those bands never used Orange.

They were the house backline for the "Beat Club", a German show that very presciently kept all of their video in good shape, so everybody from Sabbath to T. Rex to Free gets seen using Orange because the Beat Club footage is usually the only high quality video from the '70's.

Or as Tony Iommi said:
Iommi confirmed that all of the tracks are from THE BEAT CLUB, but noted that "Blue Suede Shoes" had been taped during a "camera check and sound check". Tony also noted: "Everyone assumed we used Orange amps after that (show)."
...but you know, the "kids" don't know shit. They see something and go for it without really checking it out.

Get the Traynor.

There's quite a few mods that can be done to these that transform them into killer guitar amps. I have a Lead Master MkII that I rebuilt. It blows away many new boutique amps out there. Probably the best $125 amp I'll ever own.

And the Tiny Terror is made like crap.

MP3's or STFU!

I hear you about the Orange/Sabbath thing, I just thought the build quality on the Oranges were still good. As far as Sabbath goes, aside from Traynors, the only other thing I remember seeing Iommi using was one of these:

But I could be mistaken on that. Sleep used em for sure, and they're genetic splices of Black Sabbath..

:hihi:

And yeah, the Douche Limiter on this Traynor head's kicking ass..

@7XL: Mods, eh? Any more info on that? Not sure I wanna mod this one, but I'm curious to know more.

Cheers,
D

You're the first person who's told me this. Guess I'm glad I got the Traynor instead then. I was actually going to do some tattoo work in trade for one early next year, so I may do the trade anyways and sell it to some emo metrosexual whatsit..

:harp:

Sleek, while you're here, lemme exploit that and get your opinion on which load box I wanna use with this. We talked about them way back, but its been awhile, so what's your thoughts on using them these days? My only other choice is building an isolation box and I really don't have the space for one right now..

Here's a couple of sites that have Traynor mods. There are plenty more out there. They used point to point wiring and there is plenty of room in the chassis, you you can make just about anything out of one of these. If you mod it, I suggest tagging and keeping all the original parts. I would also suggest getting rid of all the ceramic caps and replacing them with metal film or poly types. And you may also want to replace the critical resistors with some that are closer to spec.

And they put the schematic on the inside of the lid for easy service.

Well, I have an isobox that I built from a 1x15" bass cabinet, and it doesn't take up much room.(Uses a 10" speaker)

You're probably going to want a load thingy, though. Personally, I never use 'em, but then I can crank any time I want at the place I record/rehearse.

Everybody over on the Marshall board seems to favor the THD Hotplate, saying that they retain the amp's tone in all but the lowest settings.

I'd be interested in hearing Ted Weber's Mass box, though, as everything he makes seems to be of the best quality, and it has lots of tone-shaping options and such, making it very recording friendly.

The Old Timer I grabbed the amp from more or less said the same thing but warned me that it eats up tubes, or at least he thought it did. *shrug*

That looks like a nice one, not too expensive, either! I was looking at this one a couple months back:

I threw up in my mouth a little bit on the price tag, tho.. :hihi:

12ax7's can last a long long time.. I change mine every year or so, cause Im a tube junkie. BUt they can easily last 10-15 years or more..

Power tubes on the other hand, have a shorter lifespan. Typically about a year under normal use..

Basically if your using a hot plate, you are cooking the power section at higher levels, so yeah a hot plate will eat up power tubes slightly faster....

I'm using an old JCM 800 half stack. No idea what's in it, but it does the deed with a frigging vengeance even if its gross overkill in my very small music room..

Inevitably, though, I'm going to end up with a way smaller cabinet, something like a 2 x 10/12 or something to that effect.
