Every-time the start position of the transport loop range is changed, can the 'play-start position' please be moved to the start of this range. (95% of the time, this what people would like).

Can loop also be enabled automatically

Cheers
:)

Eh, I'll be the one to say I dunno about this for a few reasons -

1. The loop bracket is not just for looping, it is also for punch in and out, in which case you do not want to start where the bracket starts and you don't want to have to move the cursor back every time you switch the position
2. A lot of times I want to listen to the section before the part I want to loop to hear it in context
3. This would remove the ability to smoothly transition into looping different parts of the arrangement by moving the bracket somewhere else during playback

I have to move the cursor to the start of the loop manually. I do this *all the time*, much more than using the punch-in.

Besides which, punch-in usage is is two operation anyway. define loop. manually move playhead... nothing lost
2. A lot of times I want to listen to the section before the part I want to loop to hear it in context
Really?....more than having the ability to instantly play a loop you just defined? i doubt that.

It doesn't remove the ability. This can be setup before pressing play. Currently, this caters for the 5% usage pattern. I'm suggesting we target the 95%

Not to be a wiseass, but I wanted to make sure: are you, according to the terminology used in the manual, referring to the 'play start position' (blue marker) or the 'global playhead position' (vertical line indicating current playback position)?

The thing is, I would love to see a way of starting playback from the current 'global playhead position' without changing the 'play start position'. Often when I'm looping a (larger) part of my track I want to quickly audition things happening at the 'global playhead position' while still be able to start playback from the loop start later on.

To me personally the moving of the 'play start position' when playback is started with "shift + play" is not of that much value. However, if you are referring to just moving the 'global playhead position' to the start of the loop, then starting playback with "shift + play" and thereby setting the 'play start position' to the beginning of the loop as well is extremely convenient. Also Ogopogo's workflow would not be hindered by this, since the 'play start position' is unaffected by changing a loop.

So, if there is an alternative to 'shift + play' that leaves the 'play start position' unaffected and when changing a loop (while it is enabled) the 'global playhead position' is moved to the loop start, all our preferences are covered, right? :)

No, not being a wise-ass at all :) Yes, I means 'play start position', and I should be using the correct terminology (i've edited the original post).

Sorry, love to comment on this last post, but I have a hard time following it. If you find the time, could you break it down into steps perhaps? I have the following:

On Loop start change:

1. Move 'play start position' to start of loop.

you might have...

on Shift+Play =
1. Set 'play start position' to start of loop.
2. ....etc.

Hi Sardaukar,

I just thought of a better proposal (in the post following this one).

But since I've already written this text explaining what I meant previously, I'm going to post this as well :)

Let's define the following events and corresponding actions:

event A1: loop start change
1. Move 'global playhead position' to start of loop

event A2: loop start change
1. Move 'play start position' to start of loop

event B1: command 'shift + play'
1. Move 'play start position' to current 'global playhead position'
2. Start playback from current 'global playhead position'

event B2: command 'ctrl + play'
1. Start playback from current 'global playhead position'

event C: command 'play'
1. Start playback from current 'play start position'

My proposal was that:

"A1 followed by B1", and for subsequent playbacks simply "C" would give you what you want.
This still allows Ogopogo to do "A1 followed by C" and have his intro to the loop from the original 'play start position'.

I myself was requesting for an option to do "B2", which is something that is currently missing (to my best knowledge).

I would like to suggest to rework the playback system in Bitwig. Love to hear what you guys think of it, but my view is the following:

There are four important positions to start playback from:

1) Song start (Fixed)
2) Current 'global playhead position' (Position where playback has stopped / User defined)
3) Predefined 'play start position' (User defined)
4) Start of the loop (User defined)

Playback starting from each of these positions should have a unique direct command. A suggestion based on the current command mappings would be:

1) alt + play
2) shift + play
3) play
4) ctrl + play

An important difference with the current implementation would be that "shift + play" does NOT influence position 3 ('play start position'). Can't really see any usecase in which this way of changing the 'play start position' is beneficial.

The user should be able to independently change all of the above mentioned positions, except 'song start'.
In the current implementation a user can already change 3) and 4). What is missing is the independent change of 2). Quickly replaying a short excerpt of a few notes cannot be done without changing position 3) in the process.

I think this would improve the workflow quite a bit.

What's your take on it?

Post

I just want to have a key command that instantly moves the playhead to the start of the loop region. That's all, nothing complex. :-)

Maybe a "forward to next marker" and "back to previous marker" keys too.
