Been longing for Rhino for some time and was gonna jump on it, and then I saw the Sytrus GB
As I only tried the demos for both of them briefly I was wondering what where the pro and cons for each synth. ?

oh, here we go
you might search the instruments forum for this topic. it's been covered before.
i prefer rhino 2. esp. with what Daniel's been able to achieve with the moog and oberheim banks as well as all his and Tick's previous work. it's now a very full body of work.
but even if there were only half the banks that exist for rhino, i would still prefer it for its sound. to my ears its the most capable synth for generating airy and shimmering sounds. and i like that quality.
sytrus has a different sound quality maybe a little closer to z3ta. some prefer that sound. some find it useful for dance music.
i would continue to demo the two and play them with and against instruments you will use them with in the style you'll be using and see which of them suits you.

They do not compare, really. They have similar features, but do not sound the same.
Daniels additional pro-patches for Rhino are a big plus.
Gols new filters may be the trump card though; Rhinos filters are just OK, not great.

that's the point - they sound completely different from each other so this comparison doesn't really make much sense...pummel wrote:They do not compare, really. They have similar features, but do not sound the same.
you could as well compare Sytrus with e.g. Kubik

here we go again - they can both be FM but you can use both also as substractive- or even additive-synth (Rhino also as a waveshaping-synth) or of course you can use any mixture of these synthesis-methods...
but that's not the point - the features are just specs - it's the sound that counts and in regard to this Rhino and Sytrus are in no way related....

I say this, the thread should be
Rhino
Sytrus
They are both great, and you should own both anyway.

features are similar, but the goals aren't.
I wanted not to base Sytrus on soundbanks, everything you will get out of it will be synthesized. So our presets are totally different, because none in Sytrus will use recorded waveforms. You won't find unsynchronized
drumloops or vocals in Sytrus presets.
So you decide what matters for you in presets, it's a tradeoff between flexibility & realism. If you want soundbanks, Sytrus won't have that. But if you want to craft 100% synthesized sounds, you'll have to consider it has features to enhance and make synthesis easier, through its unison & envelopes/LFO's on about everything.

i hesitate to respond,
but unless you make an effort to put them there yourself there aren't unsync'ed drumloops or vocals in rhino either
and as far as realism goes, rhino sounds like rhino. the moog and oberheim bank are nice in that they extend rhino in certain directions, but it still sounds more like rhino than moog or oberheim when it uses those waveforms
it's really best just to listen to the demos

I don't know, I just fire up the Rhino demo and I have an unsynced drumloop mapped to lower keys..but unless you make an effort to put them there yourself there aren't unsync'ed drumloops or vocals in rhino either
Maybe it's great for inspiration I don't know, but why else would you need a drumloop in a preset, if you can't modulate its components nor have it synced to your host tempo?

For what its worth, I think Rhino eats Sytrus for lunch.
Not that Sytrus is bad- I just like the sound of it better. Daniel Maurier's Rhino banks are a huge plus, as well.
That said, I find it nearly impossible to program (too complex for me, at least)

I started that infamous thread
And several months later, I came up with this answer;
If you love FM synths like I do, you will eventually have to get both!
Sytrus is just a raw angry synth with tons of muscle.
Rhino has more of a classic FM sound, similar to FM7, but with the ability to load samples as well.
They both have excellent interfaces and tons of features, they both have genious developers.
They have different charactor for sure, and that's why I say go for both!
(I did)

I see this thread locked in no time - hint: maybe you should let others do the imageline marketing, Golgol wrote:I don't know, I just fire up the Rhino demo and I have an unsynced drumloop mapped to lower keys..but unless you make an effort to put them there yourself there aren't unsync'ed drumloops or vocals in rhino either
