Can an XY be made into a vector mixer?

I really don't know.
Each corner (NW, NE, SE, SW) has to turn only one OSC to full volume and all other OSCs to nothing.
While exact middle sets all OSCs to mid volume and all positions betwixt mix the OSCs accordingly.
Maybe my brain is lazy, but the logic eludes me.
Maybe you can do it but it would take many more settings, I dunno.
Seems so easy when you just crossfade 2 things...

Hmmm... I think it's not possible... I actually found the vector thing a bit disappointing in my Wavestation, so it wasn't really ever part of the concept...
If it's a requested *must* tho... I'll think about it...

Can't this be done with normal X/Y assignments?

Well that's what I was wondering, but the exact XY/Slider parameters evade me...
Urs - Would this not be a fairly simple addition to the mixer modules?
It would open some very cool possibilities, IMHO.
I like vector myself, and was just intrigued on way to implement it with existing Z2 features, and if not, an XY/Vector mixer in the future would be even cooler!

Hey guys, I think I got it. Check out the following patch:kodama wrote:Well that's what I was wondering, but the exact XY/Slider parameters evade me...

4-Way XY Fader
The trick is to modulate the same 4 volumes on both the x and y axises while making sure the sum of the value overall is what you want.
I have to admit it took a bit of thinking and scratch paper to get it.

The way I've done it, you have it up so that for each of the four voices, the volume is cancelled out by a negative value at corners other than the one where it appears. (That is really unclear but I can't think of a clearer way of saying it.) So you'll need to use 1 slot each for each voice in both the X and the Y column. Here is (h2p file) a simple preset that does this, I think it will be easy to see what I mean by looking. Perhaps there's an easier way to set this up?kodama wrote:Well that's what I was wondering, but the exact XY/Slider parameters evade me...
One issue is that the crossfade is always going to be linear, ideally you would want it to be constant power or something.
edit: beaten to the punch

Cool!
Now Urs, grab that preset, assign some dynamic OSC FX or waveseqs to the 4 OSCs and play with XY.
Then imagine an inline XY mixer that can be assigned to msegs, LFOs, etc...
Better than the Wavestation???

Yep, this is what I've done in some of my patches.bmrzycki wrote:The trick is to modulate the same 4 volumes on both the x and y axises while making sure the sum of the value overall is what you want.
It 's quite useful to assign the same parameter onto either side of the axis, sometimes with different ranges (for instance, I might use the left X side for course values across the whole range, and the right X side on the same parameter over a short range for fine tuning in a particular sweet spot. I use this quite a bit for osc wave tweaks.)
I'll also use multiple parameters to balance things out - so for instance, if moving upwards on Y increases the compression amount, it will also be increasing the output volume accordingly to keep things in the same ball park.
You can do some really interesting things with the XY - filter sweeps are all well and good, but there are other things to try...

hmmm, normally the mixing should be not ideal as the XY-controls are rather linear and it might need a non-linear thing. (something with square-root assignment and than a power-curve for audio or so if I am not mistaken)
on the other hand - it is synthesis and does not really matter as it has to fit one's expectations.
best

I've made another preset using the mixers instead of linearly adjusting the VCA Volumes 1-4.
Download it here:
4-Way XY Fader Mixers
The volume seems considerably lower when in the center of the XY versus one of the corners. I'm not sure how to solve this. I'm sure if anyone knows they'll speak up.

kodama,
No problem buddy! I know those pesky filesharing sites delete files after a certain time.
I've included all my patches related to 4-way XY fading in the zip file. I also added tylenol's preset above since I had it.

Hopefully mirroring at 3 different sites will prolong the file's life for other people's benefit.
Cheers!
