It's just that I think a lot of us tend to write/listen to very different music than the 100% you wrote about so that makes this a rather good flame bait post.

Lots of guitarists here, for example. Real ones, who know how to hold a pick and even change strings.

There's an awful of what I would dub 'kiddie music' being made, probably influenced by SciFi movies and the like. Now, everything has it's place, but I'm looking forward to hearing some real music. Yes, I believe you can create quality music with these instruments, not just Techno, Electronica, ect.
?
How do you define quality music ? Isn't that personal ? Your statement kind of killed the notion that electronic styles can produce quality music. :?
Bolloks, I say.

KvR reminds me a lot of the audition phase of one of those TV talent shows, like American/UK/Australian Idol, or X-Factor etc. You'll get people standing in front of three judges and they'll offer what they feel is a stunning performance and a demonstration of their vocal virtuosity. Unfortunately for them, their utter self-belief and conviction that they have real talent completely clouds the fact that they can't sing, can't hold pitch, are tone-deaf and look like a feral gypsy dragged in from the London Underground. Of course, when the judges have the audacity to tell them they suck, they're often presented with tantrums and accusations of having no idea of how to judge true talent. It's quite amusing really.

Of course, one in a thousand of those people walk in front of the judges and even from the TV into my loungeroom they give me goose pimples, such is their awesome, raw talent on display.

So to me, KvR is like one of those shows; a hellavu lot of the <cough>, er music sucks shit, but damn there are some bloody amazing musicians here who should have had recording contracts ages ago.

I just watched 'The Making Of Ace Of Spades by Motorhead' last night... You think we get nerdy with our music here!

Those guys were adding tap shoes and reversed guitars and crazy shit all in the mixes! :-o

Most of the real musicians are down the pub playing Great Balls of Fire on the piano, hence cant be with us.
Great Balls of Fire? Jerry Lee Lewis might appreciate that, but I wasn't referring to the use of conventional instruments. I meant creating a higher level of electronic music in the progressive sense. Good examples of what I mean are artists such as Patrick O'Hearn, David Helping, Jonn Serrie, ect.

So that poses an interesting question;

How can one judge music that the artists claim aren't based on rules?

Obviously you can tell when a singer is off key, a sexiphonist might have sloppy rhythm, or a drummer might just pound everything without applying needed velocity.

What if the "experimental/ambient" artist says "the rules for this song is that it's out of key, has no velocity, and the rhythm is sloppy" Do we pat that person on the back and say "good job, you did exactly what you said you would". Or do we hold them to some sort of other standard?

I watched "Alchemists of sound" the other day (an old bbc show on the radiophonic studio) and it was very apperent what those people were doing was experimental, but very obviously also music. It contained good rhythm, complex chord structure, and many other musical fundementals.

So what makes it music when we throw out musical rules and apply our own?
Life IS short, enjoy.
