So.....what are you saying here?

I addressed his misnomer of the use of the term 'nerd' already. It's a very generalised statement. But I understand what he was getting at. Science Fiction is considered 'nerdy' and alot of Trance and Techno is heavily influenced by it. But again, there's nothing wrong with those genres, everything has it's place. It's called 'artistic license'.

What doesn't? Or more interesting, what makes it "nerd" music?
This goofball from college the other day played me some techno band whose music flows to mathmatical plotting of various animals DNA structure. Needless to say, it sucked! :x

Is a lot of music getting bogged down with the recent technological explosion? I say it is, as many now bypass the roots of music to master the newest software. It's why a lot of stuff sounds so disconnected and shallow.

But as an old rocker, I do like trance, or good trance that is. It added a demension to music in my opinion.

To each his own! :P

Actually, my point was more "who writes the musical rules". Nobody I know, for sure.

Or do we hold them to some sort of other standard?
Nope. If it sounds like self-indulgent shite and clearly is just a bunch of wankerage, then that's what it is.
CskaTorpedo wrote:I watched "Alchemists of sound" the other day (an old bbc show on the radiophonic studio) and it was very apperent what those people were doing was experimental, but very obviously also music. It contained good rhythm, complex chord structure, and many other musical fundementals.
Rhythm, complex chords and fundamentals eh? If only we saw more of that in the KvR stuff.

CskaTorpedo wrote:So what makes it music when we throw out musical rules and apply our own?
Shite. Or chaos. Or a whole new "genre". Or all of those mixed together I guess.

or it could be the soulless bland shite with melody thats been heard a million times
or it could just be uninspired orchestral shite by some wannabe john williams
we all do what we do cos we enjoy it i guess.
doesnt matter to me what other people think

AS I read this thread it grew 2 pages...

some random thoughts

The winner of this months contest was a guitar piece done in one take...

Lotsa Prog rock aka Dream Theater, King Crimson, Rush is often refered to as 'geek music', classical too

The America/UK/Aussie Idol comment seems diametrically opposed to the idea of experimental geek music (those shows tend to be about Pop ughhh and not much about music)

People wanting to be nearer to/involved with the development of new methods of making sounds probably think a little differently than the Great Balls of Fire piano player

and finally wtf geek

Anyway, it was proabably not the right word, but I needed to simplify the concept of people who overthink academic concepts. Seemed fitting, sorry if it offends you. I have been called a nerd before, and it most certainly doesn't hurt my feelings.

no, no. I didn't get offended at all. I admit I'm somewhat of a nerd. think of picasso. an 8 year old could have drawn his most famous paintings with ease. you get the idea right. I must admit I don't like sticking to rules. but in order to do this it would be good for me to learn them before I can ignore them. but I don't have to because I'm no pro.. never will be. this is KvR. an awesome/supportive/constructive community most of the time. and I like to post my music hoping someone will enjoy them. I haven't found a certain genre that I can call my own right now. but maybe one day, I'll have enough skills to build upon what already exists. you should always be open minded and appreciate anything with sound. I'm not saying you'll enjoy everything. but surely one day you'll hear a guy who made such music that somehow hybridized your style with a nerdy one. it might even be you. I still haven't found my "thing"... hopefully, you have found yours. :D
