Emergency Advice Needed - Mac G5 - Logic - Migrate from PC

I've been a long time Logic PC user (used Notator on the Atari). I've been a hold-out on the forced migration from the PC to the MAC. After two years of fighting the Borg, my resistance is futile. CompUsa has a deal for Mac G5 Dual 1.8 - no interest for three years on their Comp card. Does anyone know whether Apple is coming out with new macs in the extremely near future making my purchase depreciate faster than you can say "upgrade" or is Apple releasing an OS upgrade? I don;t want to shell out another $100 a few days after I get my OS 10.3 when 10.4 is released?
Thanks in advance.

Check here for info on mac release timeline speculation:

Apparently the G5 is due for a revision.
If you think the time is right for you, then I'd say go for it. I'm the proud owner of a two week old G5 Dual 1.8
You'll get a voucher that's good for a free (plus $20 shipping) upgrade to 10.4, so don't worry about that either.

Thanks for the reply - that timeline was really helpful. I think I'll wait until the next round is released. It should be soon based upon product cycles.

The other thing to realise is that Mac's hold their value much better than PC's. You can always find some sucker to take any old POS Mac off your hands for a ridiculous price.

When do you think Apple will release the next G5?

Nobody knows. I'd expect in the next six months they'll have new machines, but who knows.AdInfinitum wrote:When do you think Apple will release the next G5?
The good news is that a dual 1.8 is actually quite a bit of horsepower. It takes a *lot* to make my dual 2.0 sweat at all and even then Logic has a good freeze function, so a 1.8 should last you a long time.
As always, the longer you wait the more you get for your money but Logic 7 is very nice.
Metasynth 4 is also out finally for OS X, which is also very cool although strongly oriented towards experimental/weird stuff. Not sure if that interests you.

Especially after my last 4 weeks of brand-new G5 hell at Channel 7. Those guys got suckered but good.
