Just what kinds of instruments do people really want?

"Physical Modelling of Multiple Instruments/New Sounds"
means that nothing is really gonna get nailed 100%. A PM synth dedicated to something like brass/reed would be so much more focused.

New PM sounds are not gonna get 'nailed' ? I don't know about that.electro wrote:"Physical Modelling of Multiple Instruments/New Sounds"

As for Multiple Instruments, maybe you are right, as not even the VL1 got these right.
I still think it's a mistake to try and arrive at realistic imitations of acoustic instruments. PM is all about new sounds (for me).

No really. If you want a sax sound get a sax player.
Sorry. That's how I feel. There is something dodgy in the idea that all acoustic instruments should be recreated for us in their full glory.

Well for real instruments sampling will win.. I mean it is a direct recording of the actual instrument at multiple velocity levels. Isn't using maths or whatever to capture a real instruments sound the same as using vector graphics to draw a photograph? You get their roughly but miss all the nuances.. Is it like Jpeg compression? Maybe I dont know what I'm talking about..
I reckon we need a massive phat VA like a Virus C with all the fx, routing and filters..
We need a massive phat Digital synth like a Fantom with all the editable features, waveforms, fx and layers. Why? Pads thats why!!
And maybe we need to think of entirely new synthesis techniques if thats at all possible. Or something like an enhanced Malstrom with user importable graintables
Jupiter 6/8 still hasn't been emulated

Caputring acoustic instruments with PM is exactly what we need. Breath controllers and adequate PM is exactly what we need for virtual sax.Forever Sun wrote:Care to elaborate, my eloquent friend ?

yeah, sax is way too dynamic for any computer/keyboard player to do it justice...
i rather find a nice sax sample usually or a loop played by a human

How close does fm7 get? This might seem redundent But I have an ol Yamaha SY99. This bugger handles samples and synths sounds well. Some sort of Sampler FM/Analog Hybird that allows the sample sound to be used as source like the SY99 would be over the top. Analog was thrown in there because FM tends to be a little to cold sounding sometimes. But I guess samples of analog waves could be used.

Well, granted , those who want to use virtual re-creations of acoustic instruments for their compositions will benefit from a well designed PM VSTi. However, for my own use, I'm only interested in translating the characteristics of acoustic instruments ( ie:expression, control) for the sole purpose of creating new sounds.electro wrote:Caputring acoustic instruments with PM is exactly what we need. For example, the pitch bend offerd by PM synths are really expressive, giving an organic quality which I love. String Theory can do nice pitch bends too. I wonder how many people here have used this in their performances/compositions ?
