...and American northerners so inclined to listen to Canadian radio.

Just heard that Brave New Waves is to be cancelled due to some marketing driven retooling. I've never loved the Patti Schmidt hosted version, but this show is a valuable resource that shouldn't be removed. Without it, 90% of its programming will never get played on radio here, even if you count in university stations.

Count me in! That show was my food when I was a teen!

You know it was all downhill since Brent Bambury left. :(

I'll write CBC immediately.

My complaint is in.
I'm not crazy about BNW under Patti's reign either, but back in the early 80's, under Brent Bambury (and his predecessor, who I believe also hosted Two New Hours for awhile but whose name has slipped my mind) living in the middle of nowhere, it was a lifeline, and largely responsible for finally finding music I could outrage my far-too-open-minded parents with. Heard so many great artists for the first time on those airwaves...

Agreed. Patti and producers still play lots of rareties, but it isn't what it was. Where else was a kid in Chatham, Ontario supposed to hear Pere Ubu in 1985?

But, if they axe it, it will likely mean more Zed and Jian Ghomeshi-style CBC. I'm so sick of this dufus hipster pandering stuff the CBC is aiming at.

Post

I'll take your word for it; the sad thing is I don't get much of a chance to listen to radio with a fulltime audio gig, but that show was so important, man...I discovered so much wicked stuff, I want people today to have that same inspiration. And as you guys have added, how else can non-Torontonians (Ottawa, in my case) stay tuned in to the real alternative?

I didn't find Zed very inspiring, but then again; maybe I'm just waiting for them to play Coil or Einsterzendie Neubatten!

one complaint comin up for that cause
over hear to,
used to stay up till 3;am ,then set the tape deck on record
wake up in the morn to amazing bizzare stuff
changed my outlook on music, forever

I've had a few other bones to pick with cbc anyway "lets rush the place"

I have nothing but good memories about bnw from the 80's. In fact it was there, when I was 18, that I first heard electronic music that I actually thought didn't suck  ....hmmm.... That was Land of Rape and Honey from Ministry btw.

It'd be a huge shame to see it go. Let's hope that this is a false alarm, but it sounds like Wilson would be in a good position to know...

The New Music down to half an hour, Brave New Waves getting cancelled, Royal York is now The Fairmont, and TTC is going up to $2.50....

I'm ashamed to be Canadian! Because Canadians are the most biased towards Canadians... Bunch of Canuck hating Canadians! :x

Whoa geez, maple syrup and back bacon, eh? Okay - so I'll be like Alanis then, eh. :hihi:

Wondered if she's selling the leftovers on Ebay? Hey hosehead, can we like pick up Ebay on the radio eh? :?

Isn't it ironic - the day Alanis gets dual US citizenship, Brave New Waves gets 'cut'... Don't you think? :P

If this happens, they might as well just sink Canada into the sea.
Seriously, this is so disappointing that my faith in not only the CBC, but in humanity itself, is badly shaken.

Oh but don't worry, they'll probably replace it with some kind of Top Ten. Who can argue with a countdown? (Muchmusic seems to set the Canadian media strategy of how to pander to youth/dimwits  )

Trying to decipher, are you criticizing me? Not sure why if so, as I think countdowns are vile and heinous (thought that was obvious).

When Sook Yin Lee left Muchmusic, in a moment of candor in an interview when asked about the demise of the Wedge, her response was that as long as you make something a top ten, target viewers will eat it up. Make something esoteric and freeform, target viewers got brain freeze.

Around the same time, at least 50% of Much's program schedule became a Top Ten something.
