Can anyone familiar with the Peter Gabriel song Mercy Street tell me how I can emulate the bass sweep in that track? Thank you.

Post

I tried creating bass sweeps before using a pitch bender, but the results were undesirable, which is why I ask.

I don't know the song, but aren't most sweeps accomplished by a resonant filter? High-pass, low-pass, band-pass, or notch could all be used for sweeping frequencies, though I'm not sure which is being used in this case.

Hmmm. Resonant filter eh? New territory for me. Will give it a go. Thanks.

It's pretty common to use a sine wave with a linear pitchbend down. Not sure if thats the sound you're talking about though

Post

Probably not, unless adding chorus to the bass will achieve the same sound, which is what I think was used.

maybe try using chorus then?
just a thought...

Yeah. Geez, brainstorm.

Eureka. Just learned how to create that deep resonant bass sweep sound I was looking for. I found a nice low bass in Albino, then popped it into Adobe Audition which has a sweet pitch bender that curves the wave like in the Peter Gabriel track, then added the right chorus. It's almost an exact replica. So cool. Thanks for your help guys.

Also try this free BassChorus (maybe useful):

I'm a huge Peter Gabriel fan, but I can't think of what you mean in Mercy Street - at what time in the song is it? Can you post a little mp3 or something?
