VSTHost feedback distortion on loading

I have rapidly growing hiss and feedback build-up whenever loading (starting) the VSTHost ( Hermann Seib ) versions 1.22 thru 1.26 --- requiring a shut down ( unload ).

I have always ended up re-installing version 1.21 in order to eliminate that distortion. There is NO such hiss or CPU build-up however from any SaviHost versions.

Anyone else experience this same type of problem ?

Bump ...?

Sorry, I never have used SaviHost. I'm more into TobyBears MiniHost.

But it sounds like you are creating a feedback loop. Check the mixer applet / ASIO control panel of your soundcard (turn off monitoring of inputs!) Also check for "direct monitoring" options in SaviHost.

Could it be that since V1.21 you can use it also for VST effects with live inputs? That would explain it...

Edit: Version numbers you quote are of VSThost and not SaviHost? There is a v1.27 out now, maybe that fixes your problem. Also Hermann Seib (Arakula?) hosts his own message board: http://forum.hermannseib.com/ so try to drop a message there.

Latest add-on is ASIO2 support. Biggest difference between ASIO 1 and ASIO2 is (drum roll...) direct monitoring of inputs !!! You should disable this, see weather it helps. Maybe you have a hardware mixer connected that creates a feedback from output to inputs?

COOkie,
thanks for the suggestions. My problem is with VSThost, not SaviHost.
I will try these suggestions tonight. Also, I'll dl ver 1.27 ... recent versions, however, seem to just support the problem, not eliminate it. The last non-corrupted usable version for me was 1.21 ( VSTHost )

1. I'm not permanently monitoring this forum, but if you have questions or problems concerning my software, I've my own little forum (actually more of a Q&A corner) at http://forum.hermannseib.com which I inspect daily - this should give you faster responses.

2. your problem looks like a little feedback loop. I've regularly seen that on systems running ASIO4ALL as an ASIO driver for AC97 and other sound cards. Make sure that the sound card's recording configuration does not include the Wave Output (or "What you hear", or anything like that) in the list of selected devices! Doing so leads to the following situation: Line input hisses (they all do, some more, some less) -> VSTHost echoes that to Wave Output -> Wave Output is added to next line input, hiss doubles -> VSTHost echoes amplified hiss to Wave Output -> and so on, until the output is clipped.

Edit: the old versions of VSTHost (maybe up to V1.21, not sure) set the input buffers to zero if no effect was loaded; newer versions skip that superfluous stuff, which seems to back the feedback loop assumption. Also, once you load a VSTi, the problem should disappear automagically, since a VSTi normally does not process the input, but replaces it.

This might also be the case in SAVIHost - if you wrap it around a VSTi, the input is replaced. If you wrap it around an effect, the effect should appear there, too.

Bye,

Hermann
