Does anyone know of any resources on the web for a good solid description of distortion effects and terminology?

I decided I had too many plugins filed under 'Distortion', trying to sort them out into manageable descriptve categories (waveshaper, saturator, fuzz, etc) and was hoping to find an 'Effects Explained' type of guide to suss out the finer points of difference. Would also give me some ideas on stuff to build in Synthedit.

Best I've found so far was a thread on the music-dsp list, but I was hoping for something a bit more complete.

Any, all help appreciated.

Cheers,
Steve

Howdy. Try harmony-central.com, under the guitar stuff.
Wait... loot _then_ burn? D'oh!

As it happens, I almost never look in the guitar stuff there. Will do now, thanks.

I am open to as many suggestions as anyone might have, so don't be shy.

Scanning through their links, best info I've found so far is on amptone.com .

Some great research there, shamann.

The Pod patent on amp modeling page was quite interesting, although my head almost exploded when I realized the detail that a patent has to go through!

Thanks for the links! Sorry I wasn't any help with your quest, You did good! :D

Glad it proved useful.

I've found the distortion primer I was looking for, too, within the Guitar FX FAQ:

Hi there,

iZotope has an awesome introduction to distortion in their "Trash receipes for guitar" manual. You can get it from their website (www.izotope.com); it's brilliant and absolutely free!

Thanks for the pointer. Will look through all the recipe guides there. The saddest thing is that I just downloaded the Trash demo last night, but didn't think to look at the extra documentation.

I've now updated the list of links above with the Izotope page.

Now I have something that explains what all those VST parameters are :)

well here's a question then...does anyone know a spot that describes effects used and which artists and what songs there are used on? I find hearing examples first makes me understand the definitions so much better. i.e. what's the main effect Jimi Hendrix uses on Purple Haze? or Prince on Purple Rain? The solo in Pink Floyd's comfortably numb? I don't own an electric guitar so I'd like to take notes from the RealGuitar VST and make them sound like lead guitar notes done in solos. well, hopefully!

Thanks

There's a few sites I've seen in the past that listed what gear was used by whom.

Guitargeeks is one of them. Here's their Jimi Hendrix page. They even have diagrams of the signal chain.

that link is perfect! thanks!
