I often visit sites where I get a missing plug-in message.

That missing plug-in is always QuickTime.
Now, I have QuickTime on my machine and IE recognises it OK, but Mozilla won't auto-anything with it and I get the message that it's not available along with the option to install manually, which I've done a number of times, but with no joy.

So the question is: How the hell do I get Mozilla to recognise QuickTime?
Sorry if I'm being dumb here, just can't seem to solve this one.

I have the opposite problem, cant get qt to stop bloody loading every time I click on an mp3, steve jobs + bill gates = fascists

maybe they're not fascists but its good to have a rant

You can set that in options/preferences afaik

I completely uninstalled Quicktime and i-Tunes, did a Norton test and a Registry Search and got rid of all traces of both.

Downloaded the exe again (with i-Tunes) and re-installed.
Same problem.

Followed a different link and found a full Quicktime exe without i-Tunes attached to it, did the whole uninstall thing again, installed what I was convinced was gonna be the one I want - and still get the same message.

It seems to be asking me for an earlier version (6.5.1) but currently available is 6.5.2. Am I just being incredibly stupid here, or is this weird?

I second the QuickTime Alternative recommendation. I use it and haven't had a problem with the QuickTime plug-in and Firefox.

Went to visit the site in the picture above and got the exact same message.
Yes, I closed my browser before installing and yes, I uninstalled the original version first.

Weird.
I've had this message on a few sites but have no idea why.

QT does work if there's a movie or whatever to watch on some sites, though.

Others it just gives that message and I can't work out what might be on those pages that require QT.
Most strange.

BTW - that site's one of our members - I went through the 'nicest web-site' thread.

Yes, i get that missing plugin message as well. If i click install nothing happens (i don't even get that window you have in the screenshot)...

I visited the site and it loaded fine for me. Are you getting the background music? There is an obnoxious embedded looped MP3. If you don't have a handler set up for MP3 in Firefox (Tools -> Options -> Downloads -> Plug-Ins button) then that might be prompting for a plug-in install. If you have QuickTime installed check to see that it is set up to handle MP3 in your browser in the QuickTime control panel (Browser Plug-in -> MIME Settings button -> MP3 checkbox). Also check for the QuickTime plug-ins in your Firefox plug-ins folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins\npqtplugin*.dll).

I had this exact problem when I first swapped over. Unfortunately I can't remember how to fix it but its something to do with setting MIME types, either in Mozilla or QT. Sorry to be so vague but I'm old and things get lost in my head all the time. The more I think about it, the more I think you need to fix it through the QT settings in Control Panel.

Now I think we're getting close to the source of the problem.

No, I don't get any tune loading on page load.
I hate sites that do that anyway, it interferes with anything I might have chosen to be listening to, but that's another story.

The only reason I'm highlighting this site is cos it's the most recent one I've visited with this message and, unlike most others, I can find it again easily.

Now, as to the plug-ins theory.
NO! QT is NOT, and never will be, set as my default mp3 handler.

This is what I have:
Under 'file types' QT is set only to handle MOV files.
mp3 is there three times, no less!

There is one (MP3 audio) "open with real player" - which IS my default player. I know, I know, but the only other one I like is WinAmp, but currently Real is set to default.
There is another one (MP3 audio) that says "save to disc"
And another (MP3 WinAmp media file) that says "save to disc".

If I click on the plug-ins button I get:
The QT symbol as being associated with file types 3G2, 3GP and MOV.
Real has AIFF, AMR, AU, M4A (AAC), MPEG4 and SDP (Scalable Multicast).
WMP has ASX, M4B, WAX, WM, WMA, WMV and WVX.
All others are docs or image related or shockwave, that sort of thing.

So, unless I change my default player to QT, I will always get these mesages on certain sites?
Would that be about the size of it?
Or is there something I'm missing?
I don't particularly want QT as my default - it was once, ages ago when I first got it and a more intrusive and f*cked up media player you couldn't wish to meet.

Thanks for the helps so far - this is proper doing my head in.

[EDIT] So, I followed LBN's tips and set QT in the browser options to play mp3.
I'm hoping this won't set it as default for all mp3's.

I now hear the tune

on that page.
But I still get the missing plug-ins message!! AARGGHH!!!

It STILL seems to be asking for version 6.5.1!

The <embed> element is supported by both Internet Explorer and ye olde Netscape, but it is not a standard HTML or XHTML element. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) recommend using the <object> element instead. Mozilla tends to be pretty strict, but in this case thay somehow got stuck somewhere inbetween supporting and ignoring it.
Personally I'm happy to not have some background music playing on a site if I didn't ask for it. It's even more annoying than intro/welcome pages.
