I really like some of the drone sounds I've heard come out of the Mutronic's Mutator using a guitar.

An example of this sound is the intro drone in 'The Day The World Went Away' by NIN.

The problem is that the Mutronics Mutator is like $1,000 and I quite honestly don't have the cash.

Is there a way to reproduce this sound or a similiar sound with software and my guitar?

Well, the Mutator is just two resonant lowpass filters with two envelope followers, two lfos, and some nice gating/CV options.

Have you tried out Kjaerhus's Classic Auto-filter? You could just use two in parallel on your audio.

You're out of luck on the CV and gating sadly, unless you want to build something in Synthedit/QuantumFX/Vaz/Reaktor. Not sure what drone sounds you mean in the song, as I've only listened to the 30-second clip on Amazon. Drone usually implies a sustained sound, so usually you'll need some sort of delay-based effect after the sound. Are you sure the Mutator is the source of the drone?

Ooh, should add, check out the Mutator manual on their website. They even give you a very lovely block diagram on the signal path if you want to reconstruct it in a modular synth.

I think that the idea of recreating it using a modular synth to recreate this is great. I'm sure the loss of analog processing would be audible, but I really don't care as long as I can even get close to the sound I am afer.

Unfortunatley I could not afford a Nord G2.

Been wanting to learn a good modular synth program. I really wanted to learn how to use Reaktor, but couldn't find any good information on it. If there are any books I could buy on it that describe the process of creating simple to complex synths and fx in Reaktor I would love to get it.

I was also thinking of using synthedit, but ran into the same problem (see above).

There is no better way than to simply use it. Forget starting out & building mega synths/fx, just start checking out ensembles you like & begin familiarizing yourself with the components. I began by stitching together instruments, than slowly began working with macros, and now a few months later I'm getting comfotable using the lowest level modules.

You can't hope for a better tutor than hands on experience no matter which enviornment you elect to work with. That applies to Synth Edit as well, but of course, I'm partial to Reaktor, so I encourage you to head that way.

Read through the Synthedit help file and follow the simple synth tutorial. Get through that and you'll have a good grasp of basic architecture. There are awlays difficult things that'll pop up, but there are plenty of people to ask for help here or at the Yahoo group.

It doesn't get better than that block diagram in the Mutator manual. You could apply it almost directly into SE to put it together.

Ok that's cool, but alot of the ensembles I've seen have been fairly complex. Do you know where I could some more simple ensembles that I could study?

If anyone here thinks they know enough to translate the block diagram into a Reaktor ensemble or SynthEdit Effect.... I welcome (dare) you....

Join the Yahoo user group and have a look at the files section. A large library of both beginner and advanced stuff.

If I find time this weekend, I was thinking of giving the structure a try. Won't sound the same given the analog components in the Mutator, but hopefully will function the same. Likely could build it in VAZ modular as well.

I'll check that out....

I'd love to hear it! I don't mind the dark cold digital world :)
