I hear Martin Denny died yesterday. I will miss his "exotic" blend of campy and classy cocktail music.

That's sad! Denny was really quite a brilliant and innovative arranger who had a huge influence on many artists (Throbbing Gristle, for example) far outside his genre. A great collector of unusual instruments from around the world as well, most of which found their way into his recordings.

There are some interesting thoughts and remembrances about Denny in this article on Tiki lounge culture by longtime fan Boyd Rice:

I sure liked Denny's music as an occasional fun listen...tasty cheese indeedy.
He died peacefully in his sleep, at age 94, in Hawaii. Not a bad end for him at all. RIP :)

I'm not religious, but it's tempting to imagine him not just in heaven, but in Tropical Paradise -- wearing a Hawaiian shirt and sandals, sipping a drink from a hollowed-out pineapple as he listens to the archangel Gabriel try making some really exotic "bird" calls.

Thank you, Martin. Great fun.
