SJ (et al), I do by now KNOW that it doesn't use the ones in the program folder... I allready got that after eric's first post. Thing is, even after a un-and reinstall SX didn't let me change anything anymore (oh well, it changed something randomly, even the display colors).
Now, after a complete uninstall of both SX 2 and 3 (I was almost aware uninstalling SX 2 wasn't required but wanted to make sure nothing was confusing SX 3 in the slightest way), then doing a more or less thorough registry cleanup I can now just do things the way they are supposed to work.
Admittedly, not knowing where to find my saved KCs was a user error on my behalf (but OTOH, it's really weird how Steinberg does it), but there's been something else which was f**ked up too as I couldn't switch between different KC settings anymore, even without fooling around anywhere but in Cubase itself.
Anyways, thanks for your help, dudes!
Seems to work fine too, I just copied the created KC file to my laptop and it's all running well.
Still a bit confused about how all this could happen in the first place...

Oh and eric... you're right, I just forgot to tick the "hidden files" option when searching for the files... lame me.
