Both are $149.00
I've tried the demos.
FL seems to have more bang for the buck and audio tracks, but I also really like the work flow in Orion and the look. Any opinions, why choose one over the other, etc.?

FL has tons of options, and free upgrades, along with excellent support; and a community.

basically, if you answer what you NEED in a host, i can explain if FL has it. perhaps someone else can explain if ORION has it.

I think Jaeson has pretty much covered it..

though I'd personally stick with workflow over synth substance.. you can always get 3rd party vst and vsti if the stock synths and effects dont suit your needs.. but you cant replace the workflow of either host.

I'm sure this thread will go code red really quick, but I have a little bit of useful advice. FL Studio makes it easy to change your mind about what VST instrument is being driven my various types of MIDI data, especially the bread n' butter note data of your composition. I change my mind a lot about what instrument I want to use. I start out with a few things consistently, but I always change my mind. I think I am not alone in this.

Orion, while more like hardware in its workflow (which can be a good thing), makes it extremely difficult to keep data separate from the instrument. You either have to use a dummy MIDI outs(which will leave an extra panel cluttering an already messy workspace) to control a VSTi or else copy and paste note data from one instrument into another one every time you change your mind (which means you also have to re-do your arrangements). If this is important to you at all, I'd go with FL Studio and not look back.

With that said, you can work and make plenty of good music with Orion, too. It has some nice synths and effects that are unique. I don't think it's native EQ is very good, personally, but for day to day boosting and cutting, it would be fine.

I know my bro Tuz is on FL, and from my understanding - it's more 'sample/loop' oriented? I do the same in Orion alot too. But I agree with Shane - I like Orion because it's like a old studio, with modern features. The mixers like a Mackie, the effects routing is like a Patch Bay, and the Piano Roll and Note Events are like a old Atari program almost. So an old fart like me LOVES Orion.

However a young buck like Tuz can do wonders with FL - but it's a little to 'futuristic' for my feeble old brain.

yeah its definately a personal choice..

I personally love the piano roll in orion for its simplicity.. click the note to enter it- no painting... and if I dont want that note anymore, just right click on the note and its gone.. presto!

overall, its probably pretty different than orion (except for the nifty piano roll thing which samp 8 has btw too.. why hasnt cubendo caught up?), as mentioned above.. seems to me those who like FL hate orion and vice versa.. just like the FL vs reason thing. Its just a workflow

hopefully this dude will tell us his workflow, his style of music, etcetc so we can help him. until then, a friendly comparison mmmmmk?

a very honest and realistic post.

as well as shanes, it shows.. one is not really better for all. one could be better for one, different than another.

My host sequencer is FL
my audio gets done in samplitude

I hate sonar, cubase, n-track, reason, orion, just about everything else. cant stand it, cant work with it... or for instance, acid or vegas.. nice, but too limited.

thats just me tho

is any eq that comes with a host good?

i heard samplitudes is, but i dont really know... seems like nothing comes close to the vst solutions.

I have no desire to bash either host..

I was just curious to how FL does the piano roll.. I havent tried it in a long while..

I tried cubase years ago too and really didnt like its piano roll sequencing.. painting the stupid midi data.. and having to get close to the actual starting marker for each division to get it to stick at that point.. frustrating flow for me.

but in orion its just click anywhere in the note box (even at the end) and it automatically snaps the entire box... left click anywherein the box and the note is gone.. so quick and simple for me.

then again.. I sequence completely by hand (or is that by mouse) and I've been called strange on occasion..

confirmed user of FLS ...

piano roll a strong point ...
new piano roll tools in 5.02 are outstanding ...

as shane mentioned above , it's a breeze
to swap plug-ins in the assigned channels ...

to say that FLS is 'sample/loop' oriented is selling it way short ...

i'm also fond of the option to render , or record direct to disk ...

if you decide on FLS , make sure to opt for the producer edition ...

ORION PRO or FL STUDIO ?
