ooh download finally finished.. it sure has grown since I last saw it.. nice demo song too :)

yep sure enough.. you can do the same snap-to-step and leftclick delete in fruity.. very nice

actually there are quite a few demo tunes (yes tunes) I like.. really show off fruity well imo.. I like the internal generators :)

this is a thing I think orion lacks (solid demo songs).. and I bets its mainly because of the smaller userbase..

all in all.. I'm pretty impressed.. not enough to leave orion though.. only because of the workflow in orion in terms of the instrument-locked-to-pianoroll setup.. I confuse easily so its a nice way imo to tidy a song.

I've tried the demos.
FL seems to have more bang for the buck and audio tracks, but I also really like the work flow in Orion and the look. Any opinions, why choose one over the other, etc.?

Thanks.
Speaking as a FLS user....

If you have money to spend, buy them both!!! 8)

I have FLS as my current host. All of my tracks starts here. If you have a lot of drum and/or percussion wav samples, you want FLS for your drum programming.

If you love (or hate) MIDI recording, you want FLS for one of the best piano rolls on the market today. And audio recording is better than ever!

As of FLS's instruments, Sytrus (FM synth) is the best of the bunch. The rest (DX10, Wasp, Simsynth, etc.) are average. But with FLS's included effects, you will be able to beef up your sound as you like.

And FLS has open format for other VST & DX instruments & effects.

If you buy FLS directly from the Image-Line site, all future updates will be yours FREE!!!!:D

Orion (OTOH) has a better mixer that is better for drum synths (VST or DX). Most of Orion's instruments are above average. XR-900 (drum synth) & Wavefusion (wave synth) are the best 2 of that bunch.

Not all of their updates are free. So if you buy Orion at v5.8, only the updates from the v5 series are free. But you will get a discount for the upcoming v6.

BTW, I'm just waiting of Orion 6 so I can buy it & use it with FLS & Live and be set for good! :phones:

By that I mean you can see other patterns that you've made in the background while you are making a new pattern. Makes it easier to see harmonic or melodic contours in your other parts (or to quickly see where important beats are in your drum pattern, etc).
Thats a huge feature for me...love it!

Ableton Live 4

IMO Live4 is the easiest host by far. I can get more done in it more quickly than anything else.

Well, I'm getting some useful advice in this thread, thanks to everyone. I'm new to computer/electronic music and don't really know how to classify my style, mostly experimentation and grasping for anything that sounds good.

I've been using Tracktion for a while, but I find I get lost in a sea of beats and patterns, and hosts like FL or Orion help organize things better.

It would be helpful if Orion had more demo songs
I'm leaning towards FL, but I'll have to play with the Orion demo for a few more days or weeks.

Thanks again.

Ableton Live 4!

the demo of FL5 lets you export wav files: you just can't save your patterns in FL, though you can export them as MIDI files.

D/l the FL demo and see if you like it, and perhaps like using it to construct phrases you arrange or record over in Traktion. Try the same with Orion.

You also might be interested in EnergyXT as a supplement/hostette w/in traction.

I really hope you're talking about something audio related.

Live 4 huh?

hmmmm...well I was gettin into it for a while but the time-stretch just sounds like crap IMO. Ive traded it for Reason 3. FL(host) and Reason as an instrument should be the ticket for me.

I personally think the time stretch is acceptable 90% of the time, and given the ease of use that's a worthwhile trade off. If I really started feeling like it wasn't adequate, I'd get Audition to stretch loops that Live couldn't do justice. At least I'd be able to compose incredibly easily and clean up later.

glad it works for you...wish it did for me because other than that Live is very cool.

I should clarify that with percussion loops the stretch was fine but things got freaky real quick when trying to warp instrument loops, always this "chorusy" kind of sound.

anyways, more power to ya
