YES they are.

That doesn't mean there are no good alternatives
and some of them are even great but only a handful
and they usually kill your CPU.

So I challenge you to take your best Reverb and run 8 instances simultaneously.
Now glance at your CPU meter.
What does it say?

Mine says 5%

thats cheating though.. you have a second processor :P

Absolutely not.
You do NOT have to have a UAD to create wonderful music and to create killer mixes... but it can help.

This is what I did.
I went to SamAsh.com and got 15 payments no interest.

I have only Project Pak. I use 1176SE a lot and I'm curious about LN. Is it much better?

Post

If you have project pack open up the f**king pdf and it will tell you the difference.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

I would like to know the difference between their sounding...

The demo expired a half year ago ,and I don't remember how it sounded.

The same, only a little better.

hehe, I disabled SE in my plugin list. I compared them when SE first came out and I don't remember anything other than I disabled it after about an hour of comparing the two.

The reason you buy a DSP card like the UAD-1 is because of the professional sound quality of the plugins, especially the vintage emulations (the gorgeous vintage GUI's are nice to look at too :D ).
The native CPU savings, while a nice side benefit, is not a reason to get a DSP card, IMO. First of all, there are no native equivalants for such plugins such as, the 1176LN, LA-2A, Fairchild 670, Pultec EQ or EMT Plate 140. Many of UA's original plugins like the Cambridge EQ, DreamVerb or the recent Precision Mastering series of plugins (Limiter & EQ) are superb, in their own right. Even if UA released native versions of their plugins, because the algos are so DSP intensive, people would be screaming about how processor intensive they are to run, even on high end systems.

Here is a recent quote from a UA support rep when asked about native versions of the UAD-1 plugins:

Actually the UAD-1 plugins are incredibly DSP intense, much more so than you would think. Running natively, even with the fastest 2.5 G5, you may be able to get 4 maybe 5 up before you were out of host CPU. To put it in perspective, that little extra host load per plugin on the G5s, that's just 1/2 of just the DMA transfers to the card, that's not even any of the algorithm running  .

To put in perspective, I can max out my (2) UAD-1 cards with many of the most processor intensive plugins, like those I mentioned previously, 16-25 plugins and the added native CPU usage, even on my old PIII 1Ghz DAW, is only around 5%, when using SONAR 4 @ 24/44 with 23.2msec latency (1024 samples).
Conversely, I would be lucky to get even a couple of these same plugins to run natively, on my ol' PIII 1Ghz DAW, before it would crap out and overload, on me.
