Is the UAD plugs really THAT much better?

What other kind software eq have you tried (parametric, graphic, coloring, transparent ) and at what sample rates !007 wrote:To my ears the Tritone Hydratone is the first software eq that can stand a test with a hardware eq.
What kind of hardware are you talking about, car stereo eq or hi end mastering....
I think the tritone plugs got to many of these "is the best ever" messages on to many forums...
... and no, I cant test it yet (my mac not ready yet)

I must admit, I also get suspicious at such overwhelming raving, but it may be that tritone is on to something...lex_strooder wrote: I think the tritone plugs got to many of these "is the best ever" messages on to many forums...

The only shootout I could find is this old EM that included Bombfactory, Waves, Firium...not UAD:

If anyone runs across the Bombfactory vs UAD shootout in their travels I'd like to see!

So if I've got it straight........the basic 399 everyone in town has it in stock version is not all that AND a bag of chips.SJ_Digriz wrote:Not if you count buying the card. The individual plugs are aroundish the same price. But the cheapest card is $400. Then you have to buy the good plugs at $150 to $200 each.jens wrote:UAD is cheaper than Voxengo and Kjaerhus...SJ_Digriz wrote:
UAD gives a bonus of takeing the load off the CPU for about the same price range as the Waves/Sonalksis stuff.
I'm not complaining, I own 2 UADs. Just that I've spent about $1500 on the 2 cards and the plugs. You can get a lot of Voxengo for that. If it was one card it would be around $1100. You can still get a boat load of Vox/Kl for that.
But would it be a good choice for a semipro that wants to take the load off the cpu for some decent verb/comp etc?

I am sorry Kylen, can't find it. But it was on the web somewhere.

As an eq freak I tried all software eq's.
You can compare Hydratone with the included sampled eq's. Other samples will be included in the future.
I have the strange sensation that I can 'smell' the heated dust that often is noticed with hardware eq's.
That good is Hydratone.

In my opinion, the UA plugs are a cut above everything else right now. I use them *Almost* exclusively along with SIR and the occaisional PSP 84.
Many of you have heard my stuff in the monthly contests, so judge the sound for yourselves. If you like my sound, you will probably like the UAD-1.
Cheers!

That's OK - I saw an old one a while back that had 1176 Bomb/UAD shootout with a burst test. That's gone too so things come and go! I thought that one was on the UAD site...007 wrote:I am sorry Kylen, can't find it. But it was on the web somewhere.

You get that with the UAD-1 too, its the dust on the cpu/dsp being heated up to do the calcs and getting wafted out by the CPU & case fan.....007 wrote: I have the strange sensation that I can 'smell' the heated dust that often is noticed with hardware eq's.

However, the beauty of the UAD-1 is that it always addresses the same piece of the DSP chip for each plugin. This means that if you don't use a certain plugin for a while it actually 'gathers dust' - JUST LIKE REAL HARDWARE!!!! When you load up an old plugin you know your using 'vintage gear'.
The heatsink used on the UAD-1 DSP has been specially designed to heat the dust at just the perfect temperature to create the same studio ambience found in all the big studio's around the world and its this fact that makes the UAD-1's plugins so much better.....
Believe what you want but my advice would be to get a demo if you can or maybe try and get a loan card for a while with a returns policy or something.
I have one and I'm more than happy with it. I can still run native stuff too so its not like your stuck with a niche format - if something cool comes along you can still try it but I certainly can see myself continuing to use the UAD-1 plugs.
No, that Glitch is meant to be there.....

Hey, I just checked the inside of my computer case and my (2) UAD-1's have become a veritable dust magnet
Mmmmm.......I think I even felt a vintage sensation coming on
Yes, the sweet smell of vintage
I'm on the road to Sonic Nirvana

The issue is TapeOp #41 may/june 2004
all 5 chose the Uad-1 1176 over the hardware and BF
3 of 5 chose uad-1 la-2a over bf, all 5 preferred the hardware for the knee but thought the top end of the uad-1 sounded better.
3 of 5 chose uad-1 fairchild over BF's
bf pultec did win over uad-1's, they split up the test so the voting was confusing but the all liked bf's better on the high end, but they were comparing to a summit eq, not a pultec so thats a little weird.
what the article repeats often ,too, is that these are very subtle differences.
underscoring all this is the fact that UA make the hardware 1176 and la-2a.
I like my 3 uad-1's a lot. Heres a tip, try Nigel on Rhodes electric piano, its perfect.

What gets me is this topic has gone on for nearly ten pages WITHOUT anyone pointing out that the question is not "IS the UAD plugs really THAT much better", but "ARE the UAD plugs really THAT much better". So, the general consensus is that there are no plugs that are as good as the high end gear they are emulating. Hijack warning - are there any plugs that are as good as, or better than, low end gear a la ART, Berringer, etc. (other than the obvious fact that you can use more of them, just sound only).
