I wrote a big thing on Samplers in the thread where the guy was asking about SoundFonts, check it out there.

Since you're here, I think VSampler3 is an excellent, yet inexpensive sampler. It can import several formats (Kontakt, Giga, SoundFonts etc) and even export SoundFonts. It plays on all 16 MIDI channels and is multitimbral. It has filters and effects. It's a stand-alone, a VST, a DXi and it can be ReWired into Sonar or Cubase etc. It's got lots of cool stuff.

It's really nice for around $100 US or so. I think you can find the link to it on this website too. You can't beat it for the price. It also has a fully functioning Demo version on the guy's site. Check it out...

Using sfz format, sfz is capable of very complex control over sample playback. However, I don't know how well any of the conversion tools support Halion to sfz format. Also, sfz doesn't support sfz format in Direct From Disk (streaming) mode (and, apparently, never will due to software patents). But it's free, and Extreme Sample Converter's demo is free, so you may be able to try it out (although you get 8bit samples from ESC demo).

If you are already using the GPO library you might check out the upgrade path from the Gpo Kontact player to the full-fledged version of Kontact
