In my recently submitted Latin percussion soundfont there's a drumstick click sample with multiple velocity layers. Hickory sticks, too. :)

Plug your headphones into the mic socket and shout at them. Works a treat.

Wow.

You'll need a denoiser if you're going to record this way, though.

Maybe not as much as you might first think. I suppose you are assuming there will be a lot of hum pickup from the cable? That will depend on how the cable is constructed. I think I remember some cheap headphones actually using shielded cable. If the cable is at least made in twisted-pair style, it will reject a fair amount of hum. The very low impedance of the headphones should also help reduce noise problems. Depending on the mechanical construction of the headphones, you might even be able to place one earcup directly behind the other one, and simulate a "humbucker" arrangement of the coils. (I'm assuming your headphones are dynamic, as most are.) To get the humbucker effect, you would need a special adapter to convert the stereo headphone signal into a mono "noise canceling" signal.

You just might be able to make a half-decent large-diaphragm dynamic mic from the right pair of headphones. With shielded cable, you could have a stereo pair. :)

A matching transformer might also be helpful, depending on your preamp. :)

I should try tinkering with this, just to see what I can come up with.

Wow. :-o

I would never advise anyone to swallow a mic or headphone cartridge, but out of morbid curiousity, did you get any interesting sounds for all that trouble you put yourself through?

It's also a wonder you didn't also get an electric shock to your internal organs, from some freaky piece of studio gear that didn't happen to be grounded properly. If you think it hurts when the sound man doesn't setup the PA properly, and you get a shock on the lips from a hot mic... :-o

Scary stuff. :-o
