Greenaway came up in reference to Michael Nyman.
He did make good movies, up to and including 'The Baby of Macon' anyway. I've found he's lost his touch a bit since then.

Crap movie, great soundtrack?

"The Exorcist II" comes to mind.

Weak film. Terrific and creepy music by the great Ennio Morricone.

Actually you might want to check out Purcell's Frost Scene from his opera 'King Arthur', you might just recognise some of the tunes.

[name-dropping mode on] i was lucky enough in my early TV career to work with Peter Greenaway on his 'A TV Dante' that he did with artist Tom Phillips. i once met Micheal Nyman and sadly he was an arrogant shit and i never bought anything by him again (i used to go to all his concerts/films/buy all the CDs). PS. To haydxn: i loved the soundtrack to Solaris (remake) so much i went and bought it straight after seeing the film (well the next day, it was late). i actually loved the movie, i get so tired of the ubiquitous Hollywood fast-paced movie all the time, nice to see a gentler pace for a chane. Cliff Martinez did the soundtrack - well worth buying (lovely Gamelan stuff on there).

PPS. Peter Greenaway did a documentary called 'Four American Composers', covering John Cage, Robert Ashley, Meredith Monk and Philip Glass. When i saw the Phil Glass one as a 16 year old i was gobsmacked - i didn't understand but i knew i liked it; i have since become a huge PG (Philip Glass) fan. Thanks PG (Peter Greenaway).

Recently viewed crap movie with superb music- Herzog's Gesualdo: Death for Five Voices. Almost as much of a disappointment as "invincible."

Let's not forget "The Draughtsman's Contract" for an excellent Nyman/Greenaway film score.

Re Solaris: Artemiev's electronic Bach renditions are amazing. Check out Tarkovsky's Stalker to see what he can get out of a Buchla. Fine stuff.

Not a movie of course, but I always thought the music in "Dark Shadows" (the cheesy 60's gothic soap opera) lent the show a certain air of dignity that it didn't really have. I believe the composer was Robert Coubert.
