Hi all,
I'm trying to find a sample of a Brazilian tom. You know, one of those heavy booming resonant toms that drives the beat in samba music, sometimes in bossa nova. The samples I have just don't seem to cut it.
Thanks

Gamba:
The largest drum is called a Surdo. There are a variety of others used but the big booming one is called the Surdo. They use a large beater to play it (the beater looks like that whack-a-mole game
I've seen a few percussion intrument samplers that have them. The one by Reid has Surdo samples.
Hope this helps (sorry rushed answer because Im at work)

I own a real wooden surdo. I made some samples a while back for my August contest entry, but they are not very good. Very soon, after I finish this month's contest entry, I plan on sampling all my Brazillian instruments and making a Battery kit out of it. For now, these may work for your needs. Hmmm....can't find the sliced samples so you will have to slice it yourself. It is a 6MB 1:12 track full of various hits. Find the ones you like, slice them out, and add them to your drum sampler/sampler of choice. These are completely and utterly free to use in any way you see fit. I am the original creator of this file. Enjoy! :>
Wooden 18" Surdo samples
* Thank Audioshots for the great Audiotorium
You can here it in action here.
The surdo plays at the very beginning of the song and during the samba batteria part during the last half of the song.

Hey guys, Thanks for the info and the link to the samples. I'm just downloading and planning on putting them in a piece I wrote, kind of Jobim style. I'm really a guitarist, but I composed this on keys, playing them as I would play the guitar the way Jobim did on "Batidinha." That's off the Wave album, and my favourite piece. So I really wanted to have that surdo vibe to it. I'm always blown away by how much knowledge there exists at KVR and how helpful people are. Thanks again.

Hi! freeztar, thank you for uploading - I chopped them up and placed them into a zip, so others don't need to slice them now, freeztar wrote:I own a real wooden surdo. also a full wave with the silence taken out and a .zgr added for the FL Slicer - they sound pretty good and even the odd couple that were clipped have come out ok
Great Surdo,
Best regards,

I listened to those surdo samples, and they are very usable. Many thanks Freeztar for posting them, and thanks also to Spe3D for doing such a good job in chopping them up. Saved me the trouble.
