OMU - and you are helping how? I suggested what Patricks problems might be, he is following up my ideas. - When OMU the BOY shuts up, the whole universe applaudes.

UltraJv, I took a look at the link you provided and it is still unclear whether I should implement the 3gig switch or not.
The link you provided doesn't seem to have an authorative opinion about it.
Can someone else confirm that the fact that I have 2.5 gigs of Ram with my Tyan 2640 means I should install the 3gigb switch or not. I checked my mobo manual and it is supposed to handle up to 3 gigs of Ram.
I am not sure this is the cause of my headaches but I am willing to explore the issue...

I have to agree with thisUltraJv wrote:OMU - and you are helping how? I suggested what Patricks problems might be, he is following up my ideas. - When OMU the BOY shuts up, the whole universe applaudes.
And, Patrick, just try with only 2 GB removing a 512 slot. You can see then if there's any difference.

Easy enough. I'll remove the extra 0.5 gig tomorrow and hope for a break. That would be nice indeed.

sounds similar to the various responses to logic 7 and 7.0.1 or whatever... i have a feeling i'm going to be using LP 6.4.2 for a while. not that i mind, though. i say if you have a stable work environment with a certain version of a program, why push your luck?

I agree with you, UltraJV, though I try to weed out the baddies, and the worst newer get near my pc, still the sum of a lot of small errors tends to create big ones.Bad plugins are a big cause of instability. Having lots of them almost guarantees problems.

And we can take this huge universe and put it inside a very tiny head, you fold it.

Thats a complex issue and you would have to do some research with Tyan/Microsoft/Steinberg. As you have seen, the 2GB limit is a tricky area and is a limitation of Windows and not Cubase. Bringing your PC down to 2GB as suggested by OMU is a good idea. Can someone else confirm that the fact that I have 2.5 gigs of Ram with my Tyan 2640 means I should install the 3gigb switch or not. Microsoft have this to say about Windows XP:
The virtual address space of processes and applications is still limited to 2 GB unless the /3GB switch is used in the Boot.ini file.
As you dont have 3GB, I dont think the switch will help. 2.5GB doesnt seem to be supported. It may also be that you have several issues on the PC but solving this one is a start.
This is the link to Microsoft on the subject :

thought I oughta mention this but it might not apply here.
Using Cubase sx2.2 and halion2 with massive diskstreaming projects, you *MUST* enable windows large system cache (in system properties). Otherwise projects will start crashing on load and behaving extremely funny (in not so funny way).
Steinberg doesn't mention this anywhere, but I found the setting was directly related to my project issues.
By the way, I have 2gb of ram.
If I had to guess, SX3 with mem intensive projects is no different, afterall, it's basicly a SX2.5, with mainly cosmetic changes and few new functions.

Even if I still miss quite some things in SX, this isn't exactly the truth. There's some really great new functions in SX. Cosmetically not much has been done (unfortunately).Kingston wrote: If I had to guess, SX3 with mem intensive projects is no different, afterall, it's basicly a SX2.5, with mainly cosmetic changes and few new functions.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

@Patrick de Caumette:
there are two major bugs on SX3 : denormalization and loss of audio sync on some soundcards with different I/O
audio buffer size.
for your description it seems denormalization what you are experiencing.
Please take notice that Steinberg cannot be held responsible for those bugs but never the less the fix will be available on the next maintenance update.
A word of advise:
Never, but never , do experiences in front of customers or employees , these are done in private ,b/c
if everything is allrigth nobody is going to give you any credit for that, you are just performing what you are supposed to be doing, but if things crash then the joke is on you and you are about to lose face big time.
that´s taked from lesdership books ,perhaps rule number one.

stag - denormalisation is to do with badly written plugins that allow Intel processors to go into double precision math unnessarily. It has nothing to do with Cubase. As for the audio sync, some cards have crap ASIO drivers.

This thing about the ram is always a good suggestion but I will tell you that in this day and age it should be unneccessary. I do hope it works out for you.
