got it down to about 20 synths and 30 fxs (some of them Sonar fx)

only use about 5-10 synths and 10 fx on a regular basis

of course in the end it doesn't matter how little or how much you have as long as you can bang out a decent tune here and there.

That would bring it up to about 400.

I've used all of them at one point or another. I organize them by type. I have a large folder called "abstract," so whenever I want some really unrecognizable mangled sounding thing, I pick a random plug.

Anything I try that is new might have a new song in it.
I get the inspiration from the sound,get "the sound" and everything else comes from that.
1,000 presets and there will be 5 that sound OK.
one day I will stop being such a "day job" and make my own;.

I think
you could have hundreds in the folders
if you could for one moment stop being so obsessional, and think you can narrow it down to 1 or 5, or 9 ,eventually.Want a new sound ,get a new instrument,or alternativly,get a new head.Getting a new head might be better,but getting more instruments would be more fun.

and 73 in my disabled plugin folder cause Logic 7 is such a damn bad AU host ..

.. and i dont dare using these 73 plugs due to AU-paranoia ..

.. AU is simply evil.
