How do you get sound off casette videos? I know I could just mic the speakers on the tv but I want to do a direct line from the audio to my laptop and none of my tvs have headphone jacks. Am I going to have to find a tv with headphone outs (i think they exist, right?).

Doesnt your video player have audio out?

Plug it into your stereo and then use the headphone socket from that.

Ok I lugged a prehistoric stereo thing into my room and I have the VCR audio out going into it. The VCR only has one audio out however so it's in mono. I have a basic line cord (iunno what its called i just found it in a drawer one day). It goes into the stereos headphone and into my laptops line in. However, problems: There is this buzzing low buzzing noise accompanying the audio. It's very low but noticable. The stereo has a basic eq and I can kind of drown it out but it's obviously there. I had to put one of those fat adapters on my line because the stereo has one of those big hole headphone jacks. Maybe there is a bad connection between the line and this adapter? also a simliar problem my headphones that I have going into my laptop, the connection is weak. Sometimes I have to jiggle it around until it somehow connects and i can't move it or else i lose the connection.

Also since the sound is only coming thru one channel its only playing thru my left speaker in my headphones. How do I even it out so that its also playing in the right. Im using digital performer.

I think you should go out and rent a better quality stereo VCR and preamp if you're serious about getting better quality transfer. VHF audio is really not that bad when you use quality equipements. Just my opinion, of course.

I do have a preamp and havent used it in this experiment yet, but I think the distortion is coming from the stereo. It looks so old.

My suggestion, from stereo VCR to preamp to line in of the soundcard; the rest is the same as any audio recording (use as short as possible wire run, avoid ground loops etc...).

That's right. Borrow a VCR machine of a friend with stereo output, and just plug it directly into line input of your soundcard. it should be fine that way...
