Just gave this a spin. It does sound like they
tweaked the audio--I think its much better (subjective first impression). The browser is cool. The combinator and misc highly touted routing patches something of a let down--the unmistakable digital sound to the Reason synths shines through...

I can get more thrills hitting middle c on the disco
discovery...

Hard to assess the mastering stuff--but some of the
demo work is clearly over compressed. I'll take them at their word that this stuff is 1st rate.

I cant speak to the remote features as I don't use a
controller. Overall--I'm glad to see it seemingly sounding better, but I feel props are fading out of the game due to the glacial development pace. Still I like the Reason samplers and will probrobly upgrade.

To me it is still bad To my ear sound is only louder. But still same as before.

Combinator is realy cool, but as someone stated: old things goes in, many old things goes out. Nothing special.

That new EQ ic much better and i like skinable combi patches. But then try that multiband compressor created from combi. Sounds teeeeerible.

Dunno why is that but all the time i have some weird sound. Maybe it is only me...dunno but i think that sound is only louder. Nothing better.

So many people are going on and on about how the Combinator will facilitate the creation of amazing all new sounds. I just don't get their logic. I can only assume that these folks are "preset whores" that don't do any of their own programming. All it seems to do is allow you to organize sound modules more effectively and have extra modulation control over parameters that don't have CV inputs. But it's still the same sounds. And while I'm at it, I find it IDIOTIC that you need to use a synth or sampler as an extra LFO if you need one. Why they didn't add a spline based page to the Matrix, for LFO like modulation, baffles the hell out of me.

There has been a lot of negative comment re Reason 3, i maintain that in time people will realise this was an extremely significant upgrade..the sample playback is def improved (more definition and sweeter top end)..there's no difference to the loudness..i have no idea what you guys are testing on or through. Our studios have both pc's and macs and a variety of audio interfaces (mainly motu 828 ii's) and the app sounds great..particularly the new mastering devices.. The Combinator patches are sensational..again did you guys *actually go through them all*?...i think if you want accurate analog emulations you have a large choice of freeware VSTi you can choose from - as you point out...
To me the Combinator is actually a brilliant addition..the ability to create modular patches without any clutter and global midi controls..in short - an easy way to make big sounds without building a rack of mess..

For the doubters...i strongly suggest you upgrade asap, as in a few months, you will def wished you had..these are subtle but extremely powerful additions to Reason that will aid your music production.

Well, in this day and age were certainly spoilt for choice arent we? There are many amazing apps available for a decent price now...FL, Live, Reason, Logic, Project 5 V2 is lookin good on paper, not too mention the VSTs that are available for free these days. Luckily since youve "never liked it much" you dont have to use it.

I like combinator for:
1. easier to organize my rack - especially on big projects
2. easy to reuse others routing schemes or reuse my own.
3. commercial refills will have a more 'produced' sound due to the integrated effects etc. in combinator patches
Good if your lazy.

I'm not expecting anything groundbreaking from it sound-wise... Still a nice addition though.

I guess I'm getting a totally different vibe off Reason 3. I'm more of a mind to say that this is the best sound that I've ever heard coming from native software. I'm definately a preset kind of guy, but then, I'm not finding that I'm impressed with the music I'm hearing from people who pride themselves on the fact that they create their own sounds. Reason 3 probably doesn't sound any "better" than 2.5 did and it shouldn't unless there was something wrong with 2.5. It should be louder of course, but but not better. But the patches they've made which include Reason's excellent Reverb and distortion are giving me the feeling that I normally only get from a Triton, Motif, or other hardware keyboard workstation. And the price is so low. I bought 2. LOL.

It's like when I find a really good new restaurant these days... I don't even bother telling people about it... because I don't care what they think, and I don't want them to make it harder for me to get in anyway... So PLEASE use the other stuff will you!

Bones, do yourself a favor and download the demo of Reason. I don't know if you have the courage to eat your words, but I'll be damned if this thing isn't impressive. What it doesn't have, is any the cool featuresets of other sequencers or soft studios. What it does have is incredible sound. Better than any software I've heard so far. Combinator, combined with Reason's new browser, is vastly beyond the synth layering found in other soft studios and sequencers. Do yourself a favor and give the demo a go.

why should he? Even IF (xtra large if) he liked it a lot then he'd have to buy it, learn it, rewire it etc etc. All of which is a distraction when he could be making more music. Im sure Bones already has everything he needs to make music.

There are far too many opportunities to make a left down "option anxiety avenue" these days when it comes to producing music using computers. Its a blessing and a curse.

I don't believe Reason is held to the same standard as other software instruments and host, I don't know why this is but it's obvious that if other apps had the same upgrade ratio in all of it's variables that Reason
does they wouldn't nearly be recieved as well. why the double standard?
