Or worse yet, one of those calls where you pick up the phone, hear total silence, scream into it for 15 seconds, and then get a recording. :bang:
If that happened to Bell as much as it happens to me, he'd would have said something like "f**k this telephone rubbish! I'm inventing a flying carriage instead!". But it didn't happen, and that's why, despite all popular predictions of the future, we still don't have the flying car.

/5:43AM, still haven't slept yet. Posts like this are bound to happen.

From what I've read, it seems Bell wasn't deliberately trying to invent a mass communication network, he was working toward a device to help the deaf to hear. That was his big thing.

Oh, and the reason he needed Watson so quickly? He had just spilled acid from a battery jar on himself.

Or so I've read.

Voidoid: Don't have flying cars, you say? HA! Ha, I say! Look a heah: How to make a Buick fly

Technology marches on!

"Alexander, this is your mother. Why haven't you been by to visit?"

Okay, time to end the speculation and set forth the facts. The first words on a telephone were:

TELEPHONE
Mk. I-B
A. G. Bell
PAT. PEND.

... but the 'phone on Watson's end of the wire had a nameplate saying:

TELEPHONE
Mk. 1-C
U. Behringer

Question: What was the first words on a telephone?
Answer: "....what are you wearing..."
"Time makes fools of us all. Our only comfort is that greater shall come after us." Eric Temple Bell

 - You guys are too much! A simple trivial question, and 3 pages of jokes and permutations and grammer correction later...

But Tuggers right as well - That simple phrase of Bell's is so historical (supposedly?). What are historians 50 years from now going to note as the 'first text message' on a cel phone... "R-U-Re-C-Ving?"

So atleast good to know I wasn't too far off from my history lessons... Carry on.

but did it sounded like a virus when he talked?

I think Bells voice was pretty clean to Watson. A good sound to sample is Edisons reciting of Mary Had A Little Lamb. Makes Marilyn Manson sound like Pavorotti!
