Of course, Mac only, but I think this is the first time they've offered this free trial. Downloaded it last night, and I've got to say, maybe my expectations were too high, with people making a big deal about L7's built-in plugs, I was underwhelmed. Maybe it was my mood, I dunno. Anyway, the trial is for 30 days, totally functional....

See you beat me to it, and it appears the topic went thud. As for a meaningful opinion, I'm sure it's a highly capable host with gobs of bells and whistles, but I found the "bells & whistles", ie the built in synths & effects, to be less than I expected with the way that people say, "if you get Logic, you don't need any other plugs" and all. You're right in that I haven't given it anywhere near enough time, but first impressions do count, and my first impression left me thinking, "What am I missing here?".mjones4th wrote:Thanks.
BTW, you gotta spend more than one night, before you can form a meaningful opinion. (and obviously LE7 doesn't have the full complement of instruments and effects)

Your first impression is off completely. Logic Express is $700 cheaper than Pro for a reason don't you think? Go to Apples web site and compare features between the two and you'll see.tkmattson wrote: but first impressions do count, and my first impression left me thinking, "What am I missing here?".

Okay, let's substitute bread & butter plugs for bells & whistles. I'm not knocking it just cause it's Mac either, as I am a long time user, especially Final Cut Pro HD, as that's what I do for $$$. Been thinking about augmenting my current offerings, as I hate using canned loops, and I have written music for 20+ yrs., and was a recording engineer before I jumped over to video/film, so thusly I'm looking for a host, and was hoping I would really take a shine to Logic. I'm just not sure I like it as much as I like FCP for video editing, at least so far....but since the demo is for 29 some odd days more, I'm sure i'll have a better take on it in a month.mjones4th wrote:You don't have all the bells and whistles...

But how much experience do you have with Logic? That's my point. Bells and whistles aside, how can you form an opinion after one day? I mean, you could be saying things to yourself like "its a totally convoluted process to do this one simple thing I'm trying to do," without knowing that there are several other much more efficient ways to do it.
Hell, I love certain things about it, and I hate certain things about it. But that is after 3.5 years.
Hope the other 29 days shed a new light for you, because when the FCP integration is tight, Logic is going to be the de-facto audio-for-video standard.
And as for the included plugs, my opinion is, they'll do, until you can afford a better third party alternative.

Not much, ahem, one day (if 16 hours counts). But I do have experience with DP, Pro Tools, Tracktion, old school sequencers back in the day on my old Atari 1040ST, & Hardware (example: the other 'tari - Otari). I guess there was something that felt couterintuitive off the bat, 'cause I can usually just look at just about any media program and at least know where to start, but like I agreed with you before, it has only been one day. This gave no other option than to RTFM before I could even gather where to even open up a softsynth. But, then again, maybe it was jut my mood....mjones4th wrote:But how much experience do you have with Logic? That's my point. Bells and whistles aside, how can you form an opinion after one day? I do have a question about the plugs in the full blown Logic, are the bread & butter plugs, the compressor/EQ/what not the same, or are those upgraded once you get the full blown version as well? I have heard that Space Designer & Ultrabeat, and some workflow aids have been stripped from L7 in making LE7. What are the BIGGEST things that truly, in your mind, separate the two?

There's the plugs that you get with LP7, and a bunch of little things. A whole host of productivity enhancements. I know Logic Express doesn't have, for example, the Input object, which allows you to monitor your soundcard inputs without record arming an audio track (and you can bounce the song in realtime to include the soundcard inputs) There are probably dozens more of them. I don't know exactly what LE7 is missing though, I just know that I'd die without that one feature I just mentioned.
As for the stated difference, you can see those here:

Logic Express has the "silver" versions, Logic Pro has the Platinum, which are a lot better.tkmattson wrote:I do have a question about the plugs in the full blown Logic, are the bread & butter plugs, the compressor/EQ/what not the same, or are those upgraded once you get the full blown version as well?
Correct. In addition to better plugs, with Pro you get some amazing instruments: ES2, EVB3, EVD6, EXS24, and now that beatbox and the physical modeling synth.I have heard that Space Designer & Ultrabeat, and some workflow aids have been stripped from L7 in making LE7. So really then the "don't need no stinkin' 3rd party plugs" rep really only belongs to Logic, and not Logic Express, which is why the plugs are striking me as substandard, at least compared to the hype of Logic Pro plugs. A more fair comparison, I guess, would likely be some of the other similarly priced Hosts, and the plugs they come with....TennesseeVic wrote:Logic Express has the "silver" versions, Logic Pro has the Platinum, which are a lot better.tkmattson wrote:I do have a question about the plugs in the full blown Logic, are the bread & butter plugs, the compressor/EQ/what not the same, or are those upgraded once you get the full blown version as well?
