I totally disagree with you Trusty, if that were the case everyone would be buying Proteus X since it is the cheapest. Obviously all of the Sampletank and Sonik Synth owners think the extra price is justified.

We disagree on line of reasoning though.

ST and SS buyers buy on sales pitch, gear lust, testimonials, and the like. They can't fully demo the product, so that's all they have to go on. Same goes for most sample libraries, and sample-library-based VSTi's.

That was the case for me (a former Sampletank owner)

True...I didn't want to bring hardware romplers into this becuase they are all VERY different in sound. I definitely bought into the hype of ST2 and SS2, however I have tried demos of other software romplers and there are differences in sample quality and playability. Also, the effects are totally different. I guess what I am saying is that there are a lot of vocal ST2 and SS2 users around for a reason. I don't see a lot of hardcore Proteus X or Hypersonic fans singing its praises like ST2 around here.

Also, FYI, I didn't like Sampletank 1. ST2 is now a stable and very usable, very playable product.

Emu is more innovative sounding to me.SS2 surpasses ST2 though is pretty run of the mill stuff. The proteusX with the extra soundsets are the best soft rompler IMO

Kontakt 2.0 . For the same money you get a decent library, and the ability to load other sample cd's if need be.

Innovative? They've been re-releasing the same product for 15 years now...

I have no opinion on the sound quality of the Proteus line of hardware and software modules, because I have no direct experience with them. But innovative is that last adjective I'd use.

OTOH, I agree about ST2. It has its place, but for me it was just sooo.... blah.

Well, my problem was never really with the engine. I always found it to be acceptably stable, even though it was a CPU hog on the Mac. I didn't like the soundset.

I really like Hypersonic. I think at $150-200 it would be a GREAT product (blows Ravity away IMO)! At $400 its horribly overpriced.

It doesn't sound perfect, but it does have a ton of patches, a great browser, total stability, almost zero load-times, and takes next to no cpu/ram. Some of the combi-synth stuff is really great and fairly unique too.

btw, if anyone is interested in selling Hypersonic for a good price, pm me :)

Okay maybe innovative was the wrong word, I mean unique as far as sounds that have a lil bit of their own character and originality.

I don't know about the Sonik or Sampletank, but don't go for the Ultra Focus. Why? 1) its pricey 2) you will have to convert your hard driver to NTFS 3) its not that stable 4) only 2 layers of sound allowed.

The biggest reason is that for a synth that eats up about 4GB of hard drive it doesn't seem to offer any sounds above or beyond those you can get for less money. I will admit that it doesn't hog the CPU, but it has on occassion locked up for no apparent reason. Look at the Ravity(s), it doesn't have the mega harddrive suckage but does have as much usefulness as the Ultra Focus for about a 1/4 of the price, and hey you get 4 layers (nearly 8 layers in that each layer allows you to combine two sounds).

Some of you need to read what people ask for before blindly suggesting things that do not meet their needs. Please tell me how Atmosphere and Wusik fit his needs. Last time I checked, Atmosphere doesn't have a single acoustic patch (It doesn't...I own it), and Wusik focuses on digital and analog synths.

WusikStation may not but ManyStation ...part of the Wusik Engine Family does have Acoustic and Electric Guitars and some Fantastic Basses and Vintage Synths too!

Might want to peak at it ... I can assure Great Quality for the Money.

All I read is how bland ST2 and SS2 are.

Most people miss the point of Emu. Their soundsets are outstanding and the engine is second to none in the rompler department.

Sadly, the presets...even for the realistic sounds, do nothing to showcase what programmability the engine can offer.

Disagree if you wish, but a rompler is a rompler is a rompler.

Emu has the best bang for the buck...old soundsets or not. They sound good. How many different ways can companies sample few flute notes for a patch???

Finally, who makes romplers with better filters than Emu? No one.

At the very least, my ProteusX for $149.99 sounds better than Triton Racks for $1500.00

I bought SS2, and I totally love it. I can't say that there aren't other nice products and you may even find they suit you better, but to say it's bland and useless, and over hyped is rediculous to me. IMHO, it's an amazing value, and if you take just a little time to make some combinations of your own with it, you will truely see the beauty and power it has.

Is it the best? I don't know, but it's certainly the best I have, and I am really happy with it. My two cents

Trusty, I'm thinking of buying the ProtX. Any idea where I can find mp3 demos of its sounds? EMUs site, bizarrely, has nothing.
