Is the Electron Machinedrum a good percussion Synth? Or can it easily be replicated with software??? I can buy one on the cheap, but am not sure if the $ would be better spent buying a premier vst drum machine.

DR-008 has the same kind of modular approach as I believe Machinedrum has...

I used to have one, but I sold it because I stopped even turning it on. As far as sound goes, for my purposes I found that it was easily replicated and totally surpassed by reaktor, which has a lot of drum instruments in both the included and user libraries. And I am sure that any number of drum plugs could do the job - there's nothing particularly amazing about any of its individual instruments. Sound aside, the main reason why I stopped using it was because it's midi clock based which means that you have to deal with very shitty timing if you're going to sync it to any computer based sequencer and use it alongside programmed drums (it is pretty tight on its own, though).
However, if you're doing live stuff, you might like the interface which is very easy to use - it's very easy to build up patterns and apply loads of synchronised and replayable tweaks. There are a few quirks and no go areas, though, if you want to stray too far from 4/4 type timing. Oh, and the red lcd looks great in the dark.

the sequencer is told to be extraordinary. and there's 4 different synth engines to make your sounds with... if you can get it for cheap, i'd get it if i were you... you can always resell it for the same price if you don't like it.
