I'm fairly new to the VST world but am rapidly falling in love with using many of the free vsts available today. I am now setting my sights on replacing some of my rack effects with vsts (free or commercial). I am really interested in responses from people who have had/used any of the hardware effects listed, and have since replaced them with equivalent/better vst effects. I realize this is very subjective, but I am trying to build a list to A/B my hardware against before making any purchasing/selling decisions. Anyway here's what I am considering replacing:

Alesis Akira
Lexicon Vortex
TC Electonics M300
Behringer Modulizer Pro

edit - the akira is probably more well known as the Ineko (akira is just the rack version w midi)

There was an ensemble for Reaktor which was meant to replicate the Vortex. Think it was Paul Swennhuis' Blackbird but I could be wrong...

Dont know the others.

Are you specifically interested in replacing what you have listed? Or VST with hardware quality in general.Anyway,the TC PoweCore with the additional VSS3 is probably the closest you'll get to the M300,or get Voxengo's Pristene Space (convolution reverb plug)and download some TC IR's from Noisevault.

Waves have a plug-in called Q clone. It captures the essence of an outboard unit. I think it only does EQ capture but maybe more? It seems to use Impulse responses which have been used to capture reverbs. There are a few free impulse response plugs but off the top of my head I cant remember the name. Im sure others will fill in the gaps...

yes, specifically what is listed
For the TC M300, the reverb is of course what I am after
The Akira has some LoFi & filtering that I haven't found equivalents to yet (but I am new to vsts)
About the best things in the Behringer Modulizer (or at least my favs) are the vinyl emulation and the spectral and spatial enhancers, maybe the distortion too, but its other effects are fairly generic.

I've seen this one referenced, it might be Amor (by Paul Swennhuis as well). I guess my question here is dumb, but Reactor Sessions would be able to load this ensemble, correct?
Also, has anyone who has used Amor/Blackbird also owned a Vortex? (I did google it but found little in terms of comparison).
The Vortex is a great effects unit, but with no midi and basically "dial" editing, it tries my patience at times (but the sounds are great).

Birrman- when you get round to replacing your Vortex, I'll buy it from you. I have been after one for a couple of years now to run my trombone through live, but always get outbid or let down on Ebay...

keep your m300 and use the spdif conector........this machine sound realy good for a 300 $ reverb.......

bether then almost all plug reverb and you save your precious cpu

I have been using it this way (spdif i/o) & am fairly satisfied with it, just keeping my eyes open for something similiar in software.

i think a good impulse response plugin like voxengos pristine space or SIR will get you a long way in reverb territory, combined with a "calculated" reverb like Ambience or Princeton.

can you tell a littlebit more about this vinyl emulation effect of the behringer modulizer? what exactly does it do, how is it described? would love to have an impulse response of it if it's a lineair effect..

As far as vinyl emulation goes, the Izotope Vinyl is a high quality free plug which can really dirty sound up
