is it time to jump ship?
pros; a) i know the program. b) its paid for. c) it has great recycle implementation. d) it has a great sampler (exs24). e) it's good for midi and remote control (mackie, behringer...) f) its stable and most of all g) i know how to use it.
con's; a) no plug in delay comp on busses. b) buggy when using certain vsti's (intakt / kontakt).
to jump, i'd have to go to cubase or sonar... that's a pretty big hit on the credit card, and a pretty big re-learning curve...
is it time to give up the good fight? which way to go cake, or cubase?

Big hit on the credit card to go Cubase or Sonar? Compare that with buying a new Mac!
Seriously, it's a matter of budget and productivity. If you've got money and you need to remain productive, then get a new Mac, and the new Logic. You'll be up and running before the end of the day.
If you don't have much money, and you don't need to remain productive, get demos of Cubase and Sonar, spend a week trying both of them out, buy one, and then spend another two weeks getting up to speed with it.
And then make some more music.
Forever,
Kim.

Check out Tracktion is really a great program. I was using Logic pc for years and will still use it for complex MIDI but everything else works great in Tracktion. I think it got the best future of any of the present packages.

Ahhh I'm so glad I didn't start with logic. The situation with logic PC after all these years is still a big mess. Sorry for the apathy

It doesn't, but you could get Stylus RMX and Tracktion2 (due shortly) for less than the cost of Cubase or Sonar (I believe). Tracktion may be missing some things from Logic, like scoring. But that isn't best done in a DAW anyway. You'd still have Logic for when you wanted it as well.soultrane wrote:jeez...
whew, a g5 w. new logic... that's like $3500 USD... ouch!
as for traktion... looks nice, i'll give it a spin... how does it work with rex files?

Really like the looping in Tracktion plus it's got
realtime Time-stretching and pitch shifting something that could only be done destructively in logic.
Plus with ReWire 2.0 Support can do the Rex thing in Reason or Reason adapted that comes free with some sound cards.

The time-stretch in Tracktion is shit. Don't tell anyone interested in T otherwise, or they may think there are other issues lurking about. That's T's one major weakness IMO. It's utterly useless, unless you are looking to mangle a WAV.somedolphin wrote:Really like the looping in Tracktion plus it's got

I think time-stretch will be looking better in Tracktion 2. But for some drum loops it works ok for me.

It's unchanged in T2. Beno from Mackie said so. You'll definitely want some other timestretch or beatmatching option if you want to work on many projects with a lot of loop usage in T for some time.somedolphin wrote:I think time-stretch will be looking better in Tracktion 2. soultrane, from what you've said there seems to be no reason to jump ship at all. How much does the lack of PDC affect you? I certainly have no use for it. If you have Logic's Sampler, who cares about Kontakt? If the current version of Logic continues to serve your needs, stick with it until you come up against a brick wall and really have to jump ship. Any advantage newer features might give you would be more than offset by your superior knowledge and experience with Logic.
