After having tried a host of other hosts (excuse me  ), I've decided to stick with Logic for the time being. It's important for me to have complete control of my MIDI hardware, and so far, I haven't found any other host that can come close to Logic in this respect - thanks to the environment.

Like BONES says...
If the current version of Logic continues to serve your needs, stick with it until you come up against a brick wall and really have to jump ship. Any advantage newer features might give you would be more than offset by your superior knowledge and experience with Logic.
I couldn't agree more.

I persanally know two very good musician / producers who have stuck with it. When PC was dropped, it was already a fantastic application. So another vote for stick with it (untill you find something that YOU feel as good with; I really wouldn't take anything for granted with that; others might say, 'oh you can do that with hostX' but if logic is still working for you, there's no reason to go there.)

BONES, why do you have to emphasise every product name? It gets really annoying.

hi bones et al;

ideally, i would like to hang w. logic pc until i make some money (heh heh) and then get a g5... BUT,

i would like delay comp, since I use the UAD card, and using it on the busses is a little complicated...

i'd also to be able to access some of the kontakt / intakt libraries, especially the beats working in cuba percussion library... but, at $329 USD, i'm hedging, since kontakt doesn't really work good w. logic and ni offers no support for it...

ps demo'd traktion today, and i admit it's somewhat hip, but kinda lightweight after logic, no?

If you're used to the depth of MIDI editing in Logic, you probably won't be satisfied with anything less than Cubase or SONAR.

I use Cubase. I've heard it has better deep MIDI editing than SONAR, but I haven't used SONAR for a few years.

Don't do it. :uhuhuh: Try adding something like Tracktion to your tool box. You can always get new toys, do basic projects then pull them into logic.... As long as you have logic.

Peace

Sorry Jeez.. Didn't mean to quote you or imply that I don't agree with you. I was replying to the thread author.

Peace.

No problem. You know, there's that little "edit" link at the top of your post. Check it out.

I've been sticking with Logic for the MIDI editing alone (not to mention using it is like an extension of myself) - nothing else does it quite like Logic for my needs.

But the lack of delay compensation is a pain in the ass for your UAD, I agree.

If I was gonna switch, I'd go Samplitude, simply because of the way it handles the audio side of things - and (hopefully) (someday?) it might gain some of Logic's MIDI capabilities in a future update... fingers crossed.

I really thought with version 8 Samplitude would have figured MIDI out. :(

I say stick with Logic for the time being...

Sorry for the probable hijack, but how's audio editing in logic, compared to say, tracktion?

Post

That is exactly what i'm doing. Logic 5.5.1 on PC, do all my arrangement and production on and then export to SAMP for mixing. That said the MIDI in v8 of SAMP is ok , not enough for MIDI intensive work though, and i think if they continue to develop it, i will be more fond of SAMP for MIDI over SX, as some logic stuf applies - e.g. one tool has many usages and the addition of MIDI as objects is nice.

It might even be worth considering something like one of the cheaper versions of Cubase - SL etc. As far as I know, it has the full pdc etc, so you could play around with FX etc and render audio, then transfer over to Logic. If you know Logic inside out for the midi, likewise you could save midi files and patterns and transfer them over to Cubase to do the rendering with some FX, then transfer back to Logic.

A bit fiddly, I know, but that way you get a cheapish version of an up-to-date host on PC, yet still get to use Logic as your main arranger etc. If it were me, I'd maybe consider that...getting to know a host inside out that you're comfortable with is a huge deal. I wouldn't like to learn another host unless I really had to, even if it lacked some features I wanted. It can take years to learn zip around inside a host, and a big time-waster to learn those same little tricks in a competitor.

Personally I'd think Tracktion would be a bit of a come-down if you're used to Logic :? Whereas a cut-down Cubase will have a similarish feel with all of the useful newer features that you miss in an old version of Logic.

I'm a die-hard years-long Cubase user, but still I think you'll be more comfortable with Logic if that's what you're used to. So no point going the whole hog with a brand-spanking new SX3 - check out a SL demo and use it for the things Logic doesn't do, and use Logic for the things it does do.
