Is there any way of sending an MP3 file to Rewire?
Like a Winamp output plugin or something similar...?

I'd like to play MP3 files and record them into Ableton Live by using ReWire. Is that possible?

Why don't you just convert the MP3 to a WAV file, and import that in Live?

If you do go for mp3play, make sure to use the V2 beta, because the first one sounds like complete shit when there's any resampling required.

I'm still using Ableton Live 3, so I can't use VSTi inside it.

I can't convert the MP3 to WAV first because:
1. It takes up too much hard disk space to have whole songs lying there for a longer time
2. I make sample-based music and I often listen to songs to decide which sample could fit my production. Therefor, I'd rather add about 10 MP3s at once to a playlist and listen through them, then directly sampling a segment of about one second.
3. Cutting the segment out using an audio editor isn't good because I can't listen to sound in the audio editor as long as Ableton Live is running.

Using the mp3play VSTi in Live by using energyXT as an VSTi to VST adapter doesn't work either because Live 3 can only record from the input, a Rewire device or the Master Out. So I'd have to mute all other channels when recording. Furthermore, it turns out to be a hassle because Live tends to hide the mp3play window when I select another track (which I have to when recording).

Try mp3play within Bidule as a Rewire Slave then...
