Well, maybe that's better as I remeber the thread going up in flames..nuffink wrote:Strangely enough, no. I refuse to fuel this fire anymore. Nothing new learned. Turf wars always turn to this:

Is that pic from "Out of Time"?
EDIT: I looked at it again, and now I don't think it is. Still, I think it looks familiar from somewhere...

I'm pretty sure that the burning building is the result of the Tracktion user convention. All 14 Tracktion users attended and the riot broke out as each one realized that the other 13 didn't know he was the only one that knew the proper feature set for a host.

I hate to resurrect this thread and bring burnt people back to life, but I just quickly compared a couple of UAD emulations to some well-revered vst plugins and my first impressions were "WOW!"
I'm one of those old-school non-Carbon14-emitting fossilized relics that has spent most of his life mixing in analog and still haven't been impressed with any vst eq when compared to some channel strip and outboard hardware eqs I'm used to. The same goes for compression, but I think they are ahead of eq as far as plugins go.
Anyways, my first impression of the Pultec eq was that it had a character that I haven't heard in any vst, almost like it had a "non-perfect" desirable quality that I liked, and it wasn't "stale." I only spent a few minutes with it but intend to really dive in later.
I spent more time with the scaled-down 1176SE compressor and was able to get a good and very musical sound out of it very quickly compared to other vst compressors (all the best ones). The main thing that struck me with this compressor is that it was mindful (sorry, couldn't think of another word) of attack/release times at ALL dynamic levels (micro/macro). This is a big problem I've noticed with other plugins: Even though the attack and release is good at higher levels, they tend to get screwed up at lower levels (and vice/versa), especially with complex signals. This seemed to be relatively less of a problem with the 1176SE. In other words, it sounded more musical to me when reacting to varying complex input signals.
I need to do a lot more testing, but I'm really impressed so far. I'll probably be picking one of these up soon. Maybe more.

That's exactly the way I'd describe the more highquality compressors. Probably the most "mindful" compressor (and hence in a way transparent) is the Sonalksis compressor. However, even that one can get 'nasty' at extreme gain reduction levels (which is NOT the case with 90% of the compressors in the Sintefex FX8000). The sintefex simply sounds musical and smooth at all levels and material that I can throw at it.StudioTan wrote: The main thing that struck me with this compressor is that it was mindful (sorry, couldn't think of another word) of attack/release times at ALL dynamic levels (micro/macro). It actually becomes a problem, like, ".. damn that's nice.. *tweaking* .. man that's even better! *tweaking* oh shit, that's gotta be the best!" etc. It simply fails to sound bad, maybe inapropriate, but never bad. The funny thing is, this is also true for all attack/release settings (except extreme things like 0.1ms attack and 1ms release at -20dB gain reduction, then it starts to modulate/distort slightly).
Cheers!
