I'm looking for a free plug-in that can detect the tempo of a given music file, to within quite a high degree of accuracy. (Purpose being to make subsequent editing easier) - Is such a think available??

Not a VST but useful and free - BPM-Meter
"The first virtual and automatic Beat Counter It takes the sound from any input (CD,line, mike) and after a powerful treatment, gives the Beat of the sound, every 4 sec. There's no button to push, no reset, because BPM-Meter is automatic".

ok, I tried BPM-Meter, but couldn't get it to work. - Is it all automatic, what do I have to do with it? - It doesn't seem to detect any audio!

Are there any other options?

It appears that this plug only detects BPM for live input, which makes it essentially useless for analyzing recorded audio.

I own Acid 5 and recommend beatmapper. It works very well. Throw anything at it that has a tempo and the beat mapper will detect it. Not only that but it's fully adjustable and can be tweaked to get virtually anything into sync. The only trouble is the price if you just want this one feature. I love Acid so I don't regret buying it but it's probably not worth getting for the beatmapper alone if you already use another host.

Beat Monitor, Beat Counter and Beat Counter DSP Plug-In for WinAmp - http://users.skynet.be/bk264570/

AnalogX TapTempo - http://www.analogx.com/contents/downloa ... ptempo.htm
