When I first went away to university my dorm was right next to railroad tracks. After a few weeks I got so used to the sound of the trains that I couldn't sleep without them. When I went home on break the house was too quiet at night and I couldn't sleep. I finally found out that by putting on KLF's "Chill Out" on repeat that I could sleep through the night. It has samples of passing trains that float in and out throughout the CD. :)

When I go to sleep, I prefer to have as little sound as possible. No computer, no air conditioning unit, preferably no crickets or anything else.

I have been known to numb myself with industrial and/or metal or whatever I can find that is harsh to PREPARE me to go to sleep when I shouldn't because I don't feel like being awake at the time...

.. in which case music by Numb, Sulpher, Retrosic, Hanzel und Gretyl, and if I feel like making myself deaf I play Verstaerker's Tonal Series Part II. :)

But I don't think that's quite what you meant...

late reply to this post....

albums I try and stay awake to, but always fall asleep to [must be the hour of the day...]

Vangelis - Bladerunner
Irresistible force - It's Tomorrow Already
KLF - Chill Out
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygene
Susumu Yokota - Sakura
Sasha and Digweed - Northern Exposure [disc 1]

I can really recommend The Irresistible Force stuff, try that out! [just received 'Flying High' through the post] [thanks Ebay bloke!!!]

Interestingly, my better half always complains that it's like sleeping in a disco - but she's never heard the last track of any of the above - that is I believe a compliment on the general ambientisness of the above tracks!!!
