Sorry if this too basic a question folks. I sometimes find the FruityLoops step sequencer too limiting for programming beats -- I'd like to be able to bang out a beat spontaneously using my MIDI controller. Does anyone know how to do this?

Say I've assigned a kick, hat, snare, etc on different channels, how do I link my MIDI keyboard so when I hit a specific key, it will trigger a kick, snare etc, in the sequencer? :?:

Thanks for the input!!

im definatly a novice, but i do know enough to say that:

it's either a ridiculous pain in the ass, or impossible in FL Studio. WHat your talking about is using your midi controller to control a bunch of different samples...all different "channels" in fruity loops which you would usually program seperatly.

My advice for this would be to get a Drum VST, a great drum synth is Waldorf Attack, even though I think its discontinued, but still possible to find. You could also use the obvious: Native Instruments Battery.

Start out by trying DrumSynth Live that is with FL Studio and if you like that, upgrade to one of the top two.

.....I could always be wrong though

just use the fpc, drop samples in and bang beats out its as easy as pie.
0r use a layer channel, or use the mpd16 pad controller template.

here's one way ...

insert a midi out channel ...
in channel settings , set this channel to '10' ...
set the port number to match your midi port setting in options-midi settings ...
open the piano roll for the midi out channel...
you can now program , per the GM drum map , which you will see to the left side ...

this will be fine for designing your beats ...
when you're happy with your design , you can save it , and assign it where you will ...

U could also make a SoundFont of your drumsamples.
or
Use a VSTi like Battery, DR008, SR202, etc.
By controlling the voltages, we control the frequencies, by
controlling the frequencies, we can control the human mind.
.... but God knows the machines took over our brains last
night ... who is controlled and who is controlling?

Yes you can do this quite simply! Either use the FPC (very easy, specificailly for your job) Or use Layers... which i will explain in a little more detail for fun.

Create a new layer channel, select all your drum channels - then hit 'set children' in the layer channel window.
When you trigger a layer key, all the drums will play at once - for a quick fix, hit the left hand side arrow on the 'layering' tab of the layer channel window, and select 'split children'
This will automatically assign each channel an individual key.

If you wish to assign your channels to your own specified keys, in the particular channel window, above the keyboard is a white strip - right click above the key you want the channel to be assigned to on that strip and it will only trigger when that note is played.

Done, easy, you didn't have to spend any money, make a soundfont, or fly to mars.

I haven't used the FPC very much as i like the control that the fl sampler has, however it has multiple velocity layers which may suit your drum style.

Hope it all comes together for you!

Thanks for the great tips folks! I will try all this advice. I'm working on some tracks right now where I'd like to bang out some drum licks on my keyboard.. thanks.
