Hey anyone know if this would be a good idea for a musician like me? Or is it just some stupid scam to make money and SPAM my email?

I wasn't too keen on Garageband myself.

I think http://www.mixposure.com/index.php is a much better site. Sure you have to be supportive in order to add more, but then you also get good support as well... maybe? But Garageband was just a little 'too strict' with all all that for my tastes. Mixposure's a little more lenient.

I'm doing Garageband.com for a few weeks now (username: HansM of course), and so far I like it. They really encourage / enforce mutual reviewing though (or spending money).

I was heavily into Garageband when they started (and the prize was a 40k recording contract), and although I don't get to it much anymore, I do think it's a good idea and venue for budding talent. I think it was worth it. The prize used to be a recording contract!

Garageband.com is just MP3.com. That's who bought MP3.com and all the accounts got transfered over and some things were added. It's nice, but I think it's a little user-unfriendly compared to others.
