Aha! It was Papazov! I don't have his New Wedding Music of Bulgaria yet, but I do have Orpheus Ascending. I had originaly guessed it was Thracian Tunes for Bagpipe by the Trakia Folk Ensemble Plovdiv (on their CD Grozdana, which is great, btw), so at least I got the region right!

Anyway, if you want some real cool field recordings of trad. stuff, you must get the Village Music Of Bulgaria compilation. Truly amazing stuff on that one. It's been around for years, but it never seems to get the attention that it deserves. 25 tracks of no-nonsense traditional bulgarian folk music. Worth every penny.

I'm definitely going to check those out. I don't have that Thracian Rhapsody cd, I downloaded two songs from napter by papazov. the wedding song was on another mixed east european cd. if you like gypsy stuff, I definitely recommend anything from the cymbalom virtuoso Kalman Balogh, and the currently highly commercial Taraf de Haidouks. and if you ever get a chance to go to Istanbul, Turkey one day. go to Kumkapi and listen to awesome gypsy music. bring some money too, so you can stick some in the bellydancers bra. I don't know, I just got excited that's all.

I don't know, I just got excited that's all.

Taraf de Haïdouks are amazing, have you heard them do the Bear Leader's Circle Dance? Holy hell, is that thing fast! And Kalman Balogh is fantastic. I currently only have his stuff with the Okros Ensemble, but what I've heard of him is amazing. Okros also has Agnes Herczku, the finest Hungarian singer since Márta Sebestyén.

obviously you're way ahead of me in terms of this kind of music. the only thing I can now recommend to you is to save some money and see gypsies live on their land. friggin unbelievable!! little kids with clarinets and violins playing on the streets just for fun. you will lose your mind when you hear their natural talent.

Still untuned, but very fun. The grass ones are narrow bore enough that you can use circular breathing real easy. They aren't nearly as reliable as the Bic, but they have a larger range...

We need photos of the reed pipe cuts. I'm going to be in Florida next week where sea oat grass might be sturdy enough for this.

And for us newbies - what is circular breathing? I play things with strings and don't know these things.

The reedpipes are cut the exact same way as the pen. You'll find them easier to cut, but much more fragile.

As for circular breathing,:

• 1. As the performer begins to run low on air, the cheeks are puffed.
  2. Air from the cheeks is pushed with the cheek muscles through the instrument and used to maintain the sound while inhalation occurs through the nose.
  3. As the air decreases in the cheeks and sufficient air is brought into the lungs through the nose, the soft palate closes and air is again used from the lungs.
  4. The cheeks are brought back to their normal embouchure position.

Wow! I actually got one working!

I tried to make one of the ink pen instruments when this thread was started, but I didn't have much luck with my first few attempts. Today, I bought a bag of cheap pens at Wal-Mart, for 48 cents. I thought I might need the whole bag to practice my carving on, but I managed to get one playing on the first attempt this time!

Just when I thought it wasn't going to work, I gave the reed another shave with the razor, and then tried playing the pen one more time. I think I jumped, when it actually played a note.


I must say, this is the best 5 cent instrument I've ever played or owned.
