Wow! There's not been a single comment in this thread about the Buchla 200e, or the whitefaced ARP Odyssey, used in the video. :)

As for the song, I almost like it, but not quite. I think it's too distorted in an annoying, chrunchy sort of way. It sounds like everything in the band has been distorted.

The net effect for me is an annoying chrunchy blandness.

You can hear Izotope's Trash all over it.

Seems panderish to the lowest common denominator... the "safest" NIN ever. I guess Reznor wants money more than esoteric praise this time around.

Post

It sounds really amateurish. Not a bad song, but the mix sounds like shit. There's just no power to the song whatsoever.

Post

Most disappointing with the song/video is that it has two of the coolest synths in all of MTVdom in there, yet you can barely hear them other than the one solo on the Odyssey. And the mike throwing thing, didn't he do that ten years ago? Is he now like this generation's Gene Simmons, sticking out his tongue from the geriatric ward?

I must admit, I was a little surprised when Trent broke the NIN #1 rule about not using "dated" sounds. The cymbals are just so 80's house music. Still, I do like the song, even the cymbal work.

Also, it's safe to say that the reason this song sounds a bit cliched is because it's a radio single. It's designed to be catchy and rather lacking in substance. The point of this particular song is to sell CDs. Odds are that the rest of the songs will have less fluff and more meaning.

And what the hell do you mean you can't hear the Buchla? Turn your speakers up man, you can hear it through almost the entire song. The main riff is the Buchla, which is playing at almost all times.

Also, he didn't throw his mic down. He's clearly still holding it at the end of the video.

And I think the mixing is fine. It's not crystal clear, but that's the point. Was The Downward Spiral nice and clean, or did it have a little grit to it? This album is certainly shaping up to be more aggressive and raw than The Fragile, but I don't think that's a bad thing at all.

In fact, I've been dying to hear Nine Inch Nails get back to this sound for about a decade now. Long live distortion!
Excuse all the blood.

distorting a Wham CD ain't gonna make it sound good..

Well lets be honest The Downward Spiral was overhyped in a MAJOR way  - his work prior to TDS was pretty good not his best work (IMHO) .
This track plain sucks ass.
All Trent needs now is a "Big Fat c**t" T-shirt a Pair of Sunglasses and a User persona for KVR :-o :D

To each their own. The Downward Spiral is my favorite album of all time in a MAJOR way so I couldn't disagree more.

Music is subjective it seems.

thats pretty much summed up my total thought on everything NIN have ever done

it sure ain't ministry/skinnypuppy/clock dva or any of the other bands he used to get associated with

how about calling it depeche mode with a distortion pedal ?
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

I kinda like. Has a raw feel to it and obviously more simple then previous stuff.

Pitty the song title is identical to an Aerosmith song :hihi:
I've finally got the feed to work. :?

Hmm, I'm two minds about it. On first listen I like the song, but I'm disappointed it's so conventional sounding.

I don't think it sounds all that raw. When I heard the new stuff was gonna be more 'raw', I was expecting something like 'March Of The Pigs', which of course had a similar vid.

Does anyone recognise the rest of the band, I don't see anyone from the old band.

Maybe it's better that way for those acts to finally be free of that stigmata..
