How do you guys that live in apartments get away with having 5", 6", or even 8" monitors?
I was going to buy some 6" monitors for my apartment. I was told that I would probably get a lot of complants from neighbors.
Should I just get some headphones and save myself from future headaches and police visits?

Three simple tips:
The simplest thing to do, though only somewhat effective is to put the speakers on top of some foam, especially if bass vibrations are your primary concern.
Second, learn some basics of speaker placement/room design to avoid basstraps and the like, you want the sound to disperse evenly so it gets absorbed better.
Third, take a shotgun to your neighbours. They won't complain about the noise anymore.
Cheers!

Oh, by the way, I use these for "monitors":

So yeah, I get far too loud. It's great.

I like the shotgun idea- just kidding. I think that the bass traveling through the walls would be the biggest problem.
Would rigid fiberglass bass traps stops the bass?
In my room, I can hears the neighbors talking through the wall.
If I built a big wooden framed box full of rigid fiberglass, would that stop the bass from traveling through that back wall?

all you can use to stop bass is Mass. It takes more mass to stop more bass, so brick and concrete are yer best bets, and that much fiberglass would be a pain...

Talk to your neighbors. After seeing my neighbors around a few times I went and talked to them, explained to them what I do and told them that if they ever got annoyed by it to just tap on the wall. I also asked them what their work schedule is. Turns out that they are regular 9-5ers and I happen to have monday and tuesday off so those days Im set.
Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good

The best way is not to monitor so loud. You'll wind up with better mixes doing that way too. If it sounds good at low level, it'll sound good loud. Less ear fatigue, hearing loss, etc. too.

Best apartment building EVER...? 'Habitat' built for the 1967 Montreal Expo. Why so good? None of the apartments are connected, or by a minute amount at the corner. Brilliant piece of architecture and concept.
