hi...i've just updated Kn0ck0ut to v0.8... new features are its own (v basic) GUI, variable sample rate support and switchable FFT size.

Image

Kn0ck0ut subtracts one (mono) audio signal from another. This can be useful for vocal extraction, sample cleaning, and even noise reduction.

it will also extract centre-panned material from stereo audio.

This version has so far been tested with FruityLoops, SoundForge, WaveLab and Cubase...but has not been tried in the wild and will possibly exhibit undocumented behaviour with other hosts. Please let me know if it does.

Kn0k0ut in action (extracting centre). Awesome! :o

justified that sounds great, thanks a lot for posting it!

Have any of you tried it for vocal extraction? That's like the holy grail for remixers

really fun! especially the vocal extraction, i found out that this one comes handy then:

Igor - there are a couple of short vocal extraction demo mp3s on the website. Kn0ck0ut isn't a magic vocal extractor, of course, but it's a useful tool if that's what you're trying to do. apart from extracting the centre-panned part of a stereo signal (elevayta's new extraboy is another good free solution for this and well worth checking out) Kn0ck0ut can spectrally subtract one signal from another. This means, for example, if you have an instrumental version of a track you can 'subtract' it from the with-vocal version. One common method for isolating vocals relies on having an instrumental that is sample-identical apart from the vocal, and phase-cancelling it against the with-vocal version. with Kn0ck0ut, it's no longer important that the versions are sample-identical, you will still get some kind of result. So perhaps you can loop a section of instrumental from another part of the track, or use an mp3'd instrumental etc. basically, you feed in two signals. whatever spectral components are in the L input but not in the R remain. i have extracted eg the vocal from new order's blue monday this way... but it depends totally on what you feed it.

sonicfire - good tip, thanks! i mostly either paste the two mono tracks into a stereo file in soundforge, or use a cubase mixer group to make it easy. but this inputselector is definitely handy.

wow that sounds really cool
have you thought of having your plug work as a crossover as well

where it would possible to assign freq bands to individual mixer channels

that way someone could try to isolate stuff from recorded audio and have it assigned to individual tracks.

bass track 1
mid track 2
hi mid track3
treble track 4

also what would be cool is if you could reverse the polarity of each individual bands and re-sum it to the main recorded audio effectivelly canceling out the selected sound...to extract the other

all that with a gui showing each individual bans...something like quadrafuzz`s Gui

thx!
i'll try it later

realmarco... funny you should say that, i've got a multi-band, stereo audio-meddling unit on the go right now, currently i'm calling it 'SPECTRE'. it won't be exactly you're asking for, but maybe it'll be some use...look out for an alpha release in a month or so.

not like i'll ave much use to use this or test this with what i tend to do lately but i thank you profusely for making this happen.. here come the hot st3pa :p

unfortunately i don't have a mac, or the knowhow...but i'm pretty near a proper version 1.0 of kn0ck0ut, just tidying up the code and tweaking, and once i'm happy i'll post the source. and then, cos it's all very standard vst/c++ stuff, it should be simple enough for somebody to MACify. the new effect is more complex, loads wave files with a homebrew routine etc. so won't be so straightforward...but one day...
