Man, I'm glad I upgraded! I just made the best bass patch I've ever had, all things considered. I made it from 2 Subtractors, a NN19, MClass Compressor, a delay, RV7000, and a Spider. I'm sure I could probably get similar sounds out of any number of VSTi, but it was the playability of the patch on my Oxygen8 that was incredible. I did the customary freq/res on two knobs just for the subs, left the NN19 patch alone so it always sounded at the same moderate level with a picked bass patch, set the delay wetness to one knob, and set the reverb wet and sub's release to another knob. Suddenly I had a bass patch that could go from acoustic sounding, to synth bass, to screaming mono lead, to lush pad just by tweaking these four knobs. I feel like i have total control. This is the most fun I've had with a synth since I got my SH101 over 20 years ago. I'm exceedingly glad I didn't sell off the Oxygen8 like I was planning recently. I want to carry it with me everywhere from now on.
Reason may not be the best available music software, you can get comparable products cheaper etc, and I can understand people who feel that way, but I just confirmed that I personally got more than my money's worth. Joy is the ultimate gauge for something's worth IMO, and I just had a joyous, glorious time indeed!

Yeah, I just had a Funkadelic Maggotbrain-like experience. Maybe even had a flashback

I think it's more the feeling of the sound changing through time that made me feel like that. You are familiar with Maggotbrain, yes? The patch probably isn't very special to anyone but me, I'm a novice at patch design, but Combinator is making me feel like my computer is much more of an instrument than ever. Back in the days before patch memory and LCD displays, when synths had knobs and sliders all over the place, they really felt like instruments. When I got an AlphaJuno, I had a little death. I know people look back and like that synth a lot, and I could program the hell out of it, but it wasn't a joy to use and definitely didn't feel like an organic experience like my SH101 did. The same is true with computer music to me, there has always been this disconnect. And using the knobs on my Oxygen8 has never been as fulfilling as now. I finally feel like I have an 'analog' instrument. I'm not talking about oscillators, but the tactile feeling and 'oneness' with the sounds. It's freaking exhilarating. Below is jibberish so don't take it too seriously, since I spent time writing it I figured I might as well post it. Time to get some sleep....soulkraka wrote:did you say "funkadelic"??? I think you need to share this patch of yours
I literally feel high, though I've laid off drugs for a few years now. (But I remember how waves of laughter shades of joy caress you (thanks George for the words) when you are high on LSD and I was feeling like that. Same way I felt with the SH101. I remember the first time I dropped acid I felt like a synthesiser, like I had ocillators and could tweak and tune myself...)
