How is the workflow of Traktion compared to FL, knowing that my style of music is based on Patterns? - Maybe someone converted from FL to Traktion as a main host can give a good subjective answer.
Thanks for help.

I am a Tracktion user who has also tried FL Studio.
I think the workflow in Tracktion is one of it's main strengths (among many, of course!). But I am comfortable working in a more linear manner.
FL is a great program, but the one thing I didn't like about it was the sense that many of its features were "bolted" on rather than part of the original logic of the program. A good example is the way audio and automation are bolted on to the Play List. In Tracktion you will find that everything flows very logically and nothing seems like an afterthought. This is because it has been designed from the ground up to do what it does, rather than evolving out of (in FL's case) a drum pattern maker.
One other thing that you will like for doing patterns in Tracktion is that everything - MIDI or audio - is handled on a clip bases within the track lane. So if you add a MIDI clip you can decide how many bars it is and then just copy it along the grid for as many times as you like. In this sense it is much better for pattern based composition than other big name sequenceres such as Cubase.
Of course, because Tracktion is a VST and ReWire host, you can use FL5 within Tracktion anyway, so that you can get the best of both worlds.
Check the demo and see what you think.
But one other thing - if pattern based composition is your thing, but you want to move up to new software, try Live 4 as well. It combines a more pattern based approach (in "Session" view) with many of Tracktion's most appealing features and workflow (in "Arrangement" view). And it has much better time-stretch than Tracktion 2, in case this is important to you.
Hope this helps.

For pattern based music I think I would stay with FL for now.
With Tracktion, if you have copy/pasted a part all over your song and then decide to change the pattern a bit you will have to completely re-do the entire thing because the copyed clips(pattern) are not linked. Changing one will only change that one, not all of them.
Maybe T2 (due out very soon) will address this with linked clips.

I'm trying the demo for now, but I haven't seen any step sequencer or something componsate for it there? Do you have any idea? and what about the playing list?if pattern based composition is your thing, but you want to move up to new software, try Live 4 as well
Thanks

that is a good way of putting it.AD80 wrote:Tracktion vs. FL is like night and day. Tracktion is a lot more linear than FL. If your music is pattern based FL is a better choice IMHO.

I think one thing to keep in mind is that fl + tracktion (even t2) is cheaper than live 4 alone.Ahmed wrote:I'm trying the demo for now, but I haven't seen any step sequencer or something componsate for it there? Live 4 cannot compare with the fl/traction as a pair. Fl rewires super to tracktion, or, use it as a vst.......works very very well.

I'm curious; when you rewire FL to Tracktion do you still use FL's channels (the step sequencer) to lay out your tracks, melodies, drums etc.. then line them into Tracktion sequencer? Or do you do something else to have the best of both?Fl rewires super to tracktion, or, use it as a vst.......works very very well.

I don't see any mention of energyXT in this thread? It's great for pattern based composition (and for many many other things). It's a host but can also be used as a VST within Tracktion. Best of both worlds...

but I've read there are some problems with that FL-Tracktion combination... problems with FL countdown when pressing play, things like that. I haven't actually use that combination myself, but since i own both programs maybe I will in the future.
what are the advantages you see in using both instead of using just FL?

I went to tracktion from fl 3.56.
First i used a combination of fl and tracktion: made loops in fl, which i used as vst in tracktion, and did audio editing in tracktion.
After a while i left fl completely, when i got used to the tracktion midi editor, and i would never go back.
I do agree that tracktion and fl are like day and night btw, using only tracktion surely changed my style- audio has gotten more important than midi for my music...
