I am pretty sure I am going to buy Kompakt to use with at least one or two Kontakt sample libraries (I do not need the additional features in Kontakt).

Since Kontakt 2 is coming out, I do not know what NI is going to do with Kompakt. If they are going to discontinue the $129 upgrade and push everyone into buying Kontakt 2 (at a much higher price point) that would be a reason to buy Kompakt now.

On the other hand, if they will offer the same deal on Kompakt 2 (that can play Kontakt 1 and 2 samples and include a better library), maybe it would pay to wait.

Any thoughts on the very important topic?

I would say wait for 17 years - the software available then will blow Kompakt out of the water.

And at a fraction of the price.

Trust me ;-)

Yep, the "general rule" is that you will get more for your $$ if you wait.

But not always. For example, I am thankful to this day that I jumped quickly on the sfz+ giga beta sale.

(Here you may assume the most I will want to wait is 6 months).

How much music can you get done with it in six months? I dunno, I may be a bit of an impulse shopper when it comes to these things.

Still, in an industry flooded with constant upgrades and updates, it seems to me that you could spend a lot of time waiting for each next version. Time that could be spent making music with this version now.

On Kompakt specifically: It's pretty good. I use Kontakt on my Mac and PC, but I have Kompakt on my Receptor so that I can take my patches out live. It oes the job well enough, and has enough tweakability that I can create entirely new patches, too.

Are you sure Kompakt 2 will be able to play Kontakt's library?

No, I would think it would (since Kontakt 2 does), but I have no idea what NI will do.

That possibility would be another reason to pick up Kompakt (1) now.

jeffn1, I command you to get gear. If you don't get this, get something else. Plant your seed in the gear. Make a Rock Baby.

Hope my advice helps!
If every KVR member wrote one review a year we'd have 1340 reviews each day!

Hey, Scot. I almost missed your post (I am glad I reread the thread!).

How are you doing? Has you hand improved? (maybe these aren't appropriate questions for the forum, but feel free to pm me if you feel like it).

How would you compare the Kompakt soundest to, say Sampletank 2 or Sonic Synth 2. I know its much smaller, but for the patches it has, is it similar or better quality?

If you get a minute, I just finished up a new piece (subject to some final "premastering" (i.e., limiting, compression, etc on the stereo wave as whole)).

The name of the piece is "Surfing The Solar Winds". I will admit that when I thought of the name, I thought of your pieces that had a somewhat similar name (but it referred to swimming in a plasma sea, or something to that effect).

Here is the link:

Anyway, if you get a minute, let me know what you think.

My hand is doing better, Jeff...thanks for asking. Well, to put it more accurately, I am doing ebtter with my hand... It'll never be like it was, but I have re-taught myself to draw, to write, to type. I can play keys a bit, but not like I used to.

As for the Kompakt library, I was surprised by how good it sounded. There is some nice, usable stuff in there. I don't have ST2 or SS2, but I find more use for the Kompakt (and Kontakt) library than I do for ST1. Mind you, the reason I got Kompakt was that it makes a good live sampler for me. Since I have done so much commercial sound design for the Kontakt/Kompakt format, it was a good way to get my own library into Receptor for live work. No need to resample into my hardware sampler! I am actually about to start working on a personal Kompakt project for my live gigs. I am making a sort of small, quick-loading ROMpler for it. Kind of along the lines of some of my favorite hardware PCM synths: VFX, ESQ-1, K4, etc. Those machines had onboard memories of only a few megs, but sounded incredible. It should be easy to do something like that for Kompakt.

In any event, I don't think you will be disappointed. There is some good stuff out there. Drop me a line after you get it, and I will send you a custom "Scot Solida" CD collection of Kontakt sounds I have done.

Well, there's an offer I won't pass up! :)

Thanks.

I wouldn't wait for Kompakt at all. For the much lower price, you basically get a very stripped down version of Kontakt. IMHO there are better choices out there, i.e. Sampletank L, VSampler - for about the same money.

If for any reason, I would suggest you get one of the sample/soft sampler bundles from EastWest, etc. which bundles a limited-version Kompakt for about $100. If you like it, you can still upgrade to the full version on the NI website.
